Glowing exhaust

87 TA (383\TPI\EB cat-back) with SLP stainless headers (AIR) and new cat... the entire length of the exhaust glows cherry red and smokes even at an idle. The glow goes al the way back to the muffler. The engine starts and idles well.

My brother (allegedly a mechanic) "fixed" the car, but it didn't do that when I brought it to him. I understand that this is a "lean" condition issue... but I put it all back together after it was apart for a long time... could I have hooked up the smog air injection wrong? How else could a FI engine with less then 50 miles start acting this way?

HHHeeelllpppp!

If your friend messed with the timing he may have forgotten to disconnect the brown wire located near the blower moter on the passenger side (the manual gives a more accurate description). This is a MUST when adjusting the timing.

Running too rich will make the exhaust glow more often than a lean condition.

Running leaner is always hotter. Also, if you were to ceramic coat or Jet coat the headers they will not glow. The stainless doesn't allow the heat to dissapate, so they get even hotter. Like the hot rodders that crome their radiators, or paint them. Then they wonder why they run so hot.

The stainless headers aren't coated. And the exhaust runs so hot at an idle that it's smoking for it's entire length (to the muffler) and you can actually see the exaust pipe glowing all the way to the muffler.

This car has had some elctrical problems (the reason my bro "fixed" it. I haven't been able to contact himto find out about the timing... it wasn't doing this when he laid hands on it.)

At this point, I know to check the timing (disconnecting the brown wire) are there any other ideas?

Would you just listen to me!! Yes a lean engine will run hot and the exhaust hotter BUT............... if you have raw gas being dumped into the exhaust stream and burning then the exhaust will glow damn near to the end of the muffler. A lean vehicle will only make the headers or manifolds glow. You said your brother messed with some wiring, right. Maybe for whatever reason the injectors are staying open too long or the ECM is fried, dumping raw gas into your engine. Find out what the hell your brother did and reverse it if possible.
