Edelbrock E-Tec head

I was thinking about going with the 170 aluminum E-Tec over the cast iron vortec heads.

Anybody have any experience with these heads the intake is 1.94 and exhaust is 1.55 so they should fit a 305.

According to the ad they out perform Vortec by 12hp and 11tq and flow 20% more on exhaust.

I will most likely put a Edelbrock RPM Air Gap vortec intake in. Other mods being done would be 3.42 gears, Sub frame connectors and srut tower, 4" cowl hood,MSD igntion and coil and cap.

Heres my car and mods
AIR FUEL
Edelbrock 600 cfm Electric Choke Carb, Edelbrock Performer Intake Manifold, 14" Open Air Cleaner, KN air filter
VALVE TRAIN
Comp Cams Roller Cam 260, Comp Cams Roller Lifter, GM Aluminum 1.5 Roller Rocker Arms, New Springs and Retainers, Double Roller Timing
EXHAUST
Edelbrock Headers and Y pipe, High Flow Cat, 3"Hooker Cat Back
DRIVETRAIN TRANS
Auburn POSI 2.73 gears, BM Megashifter(rachet)
COOLING
165 thermostat, Fan on at start, New water pump
ELECTRIC
New HEI Distributor, Computer Delete
DYNO
187hp 263tq rearwheel, 226hp 316tq flywheel

Can't say I've used them myself but from what I have seen, they are a superior engineered head. They have all the power making characteristics that a L31 head has, but they're not like a factory casting they have been carefully cleaned up. If you're prepared to do the work though, the L31 heads will be your best bang for the buck in this case; you're just adding a bit of weight with the iron casting over the aluminum. But sure if you have the money, the E-tec is a great head.

if you put them on your 305, you will lose compression going from a 58 cc head (stock 305) to a 64 cc (stock Vortec size). Or do they offer them in the smaller chamber size?

the ETEC are a little over a $1000 and the AFR are $1200-1500, plus the AFR won't fit a 305. If I get new pistons won't that raise my compresion back up.

new pistons, i wouldn't bother to do anything to the shortblock of that 305. the money its going to cost to rebuild the bottom end just isn't worth it. go get a 350 bottom end, and throw a set of E-tec 200's on there. you'll make way more power, way easier.

Would you all recommend the 170cc or the 200cc version for a street 350? I have 9.6:1 compression also. I'm looking for over 350 fwhp. I think either of the e-tec heads and a decent cam will get me over that mark. Plus Ill be saving some weight with the alluminum heads.

How much lift can a set of stock edelbrock E-TEC heads take? Im looking at getting a xe270 cam. or the xe268 roller cam. Both right around .500 lift with 1.5s.

I've been looking at heads for awhile and I think the e-tecs seem to be a real nice head.

Also do the e-tecs take centerbolt or perimeter valve covers?

Depends on what you want:

ETEC170 - dual plane, 220-230 duration at 0.050" and have a nice little torquey street engine.

ETEC200 - dual plane - maybe single plane - 240-250 duration at 0.050" high stall and good carb and you'll have a screaming motor (although better have the bottom end to keep up with it)
