Non thirdgen but desperate

Ok...once again i come back with a 3rdgen question..but this pertains to 3rd gen Nissan maxima
Symptoms--177k miles, valves tick on and off untill warmed up, sounds like rod knock untill warmed up. Motor had lots of sludge in it, which i pulled oil pan and valve covers and got some(most) out. has clean oil and a factory oil filter on it. Sometimes it takes up to 5 sec to it to build up oil psi on a cold start.
Dont know oil psi due to car only having a dummy light

Now...what do yall think..?

trade it for a chevy. it doesn't sound good, but you need to fit a mechanical gauge on it somewhere to check the actual oil preasure.

Did you clean out the oil pick-up screen??

These have "HLA" type lifters. (hydraulic lash adjusters)

It is very common for these to start acting up in high mileage applications. They are really small lifters in the rocker arms. They plug up real easy.

Belive it or not a couple of dealers around here are putting "Rislone" oil treatment in them and it is cleaning them out.

I just did one with the same symptoms as yours and it worked.

I would try a jug of rislone with an oil change using 10/30 or 10/40, stay away from thick oils, this just makes it worse.

I personally don't like any additives but you have to do what you have to do. Those HLAs are expensive to replace.

This is taking for granted that the noise you hear is valvetrain and not a rod knock.

yeah they're 45 bucks a piece from the dealer, still expensive from a parts chain(about half that). Iv tried Rislone and it didnt do anything
would low oil pressure cause these symptoms too?

Yes.

I would do as stated above and put a mechanical gauge on it.

See if you have anything left to worry about.
