ok, i want to take a 350 and bore it out to 406(what the stroker kit needs). .60 over.. & all that... now, the block that i'll get, once i find one & have the $$$(i don't spend what i don't have, not going into debt, sorry), anyways, the block will probably be all crusty & old, so... ya, i'd need to have it cleaned, everything like.. redone & all too, so... how much would you say that'd cost? iron block, not aluminum. I'm looking to spend about 200 on a used block, and i'm hoping to get away with 200-350 for the block work, but i have no clue how much it runs, never checked. I know a guy that knows a guy that could probably do it cheap, i'll ask him after you all give me estimates.

You can't bore a 350 to 406. A 400 .030 over is a 406. A stroked 350 will go to 383 when .030 over and a littler higher .060 over. The machine work will vary from place to place so we can't really tell you how much it will cost, go and ask. For my prep work it cost 90$ to bake the block and 190$ to bore all 8 cylinders .030 over.

 

You cannot bore a 350 out to a 406. Maybe your thiniking of a 383 bore the 350 block .030 over, and a 400 crank. But for a 406 you need a 400 block bored .030 over.

call machins shops in your area for prices since they vary a lot from place to place. for 200 dollars i'd think you could get a complete running engine, maybe they cost more where you live. i just paid 400 for a complete and good 402.

 

ok, cool, i'm glad you guys told me i can't bore out 350 to 406, lol, i'd of bought one and been like.. "fudge"... but the other f word. & then the s word.

Anyways, now i'm looking for 400 small blocks, thanks guys.... Also... how big of a performance difference is it between roller cams and hydraullic cams?

 

I just got a complete 400 for $50 bucks. Ooooh the possibilities....

They wasnt a 400 block made with roller cams. You can only retrofit them that way.

Lucky SOB! A few years ago I traded a POS '85 Grand Am with a blown head gasket and a cracked piston for a virgin 4-bolt 400 block, then sold it for chump change cause I needed the money. Nobody ever needs money that badly.

Call for prices and then call your local BBB and ask about them. We got a guy on town called AArons who screws up every motor he touches but he is still in business. Thing with the BBB is as long as the owner of the business never answers their calls / hangs up on them. They can't do much. Or so they say. But atleast you know if you taking your block to someone who often takes short cuts and just guess atthe work needed done.

Guy told my buddy he needed he crank cut and even showed us the back of the shop. Where my buddies engine sat dirty as heck still and the crank was/had never been removed. Nothing had been removed and mic'ed but he alread had a nice like of what maching the block needed, even though no one ever check.

He ended up letting the guy do it and then had to take it to another shop to have everything fixed.

Cost twice as much in the end.

you can take one that takes a hydraullic and have it use roller? what do they do? i mean.. what really is the difference? hole size ? or... shape? grooves.. what? & is it an expensive process?

 

You can make a 350 block into 396ci....but not a 406ci. To make a 396 small block you just need a 3.875" stroke crank(callies or Oliver) and 6.0in rods......but its $$$$$
