DON'T pay anything extra for these so-called "HO" heads. They should be 416 castings and there is absolutely nothing different about them being on a Z28, believe it or not!

If nothing else you can get them from any junkyard for about $30 or so and rebuild them, after porting and polishing them.

Check out the link at the end of my sig.

You can get a whole junkyard motor for $100 around here, about 30-40 for heads.

Yep, the 416 is a very common head on the early 80's 305's. They can be found in the Monte Carlo, Impala, Grand Prix, Cutlass, etc.

I currently run 601 castings on my 86 LG4, too. I got them from Apeiron, who took them off his 84 Z28's L69 several years back. I ported and polished them and they run mighty fine

but this would disprove all that reading ive done about the h.o. heads being the same as the lg4 heads and also change what are considered to be the differences between the two motors (l69 & lg4), wheres the casting number on the head please and ill check my l69 to be sure, if they are not the lg4 heads, ill be happy

actually my 87 305 came with 081 heads. Just as good as the 416 for porting. Main difference is the angle of the 4 center bolts 2 on each side are drilled and tapped different. The 081 also has 1.84 intake valves not sure what the 416 have I think they are 1.94 intake

Well Chris, you're the one who told me you took them off the engine in your 84 Z28, didn't you???

And seeing as I have your attention ...

When are you moving to Edmonton? Coming through Cowtown? What about Marquise's mom?

No, you read pretty well correct. The 601 castings are just another 305 head from the early 80s. Not as common as the 416s but not a whole lot different. Mostly combustion chamber and bowl shape.

The casting is number is 8 digits etched on top of the head between the valve springs.

The 081, 416 and 601 heads all have 1.84" intake valves and 1.5" exhausts. But they can all be opened to 1.94" for about 10 extra ponies above 5000 rpm

I think that when used on a 350 you can put in 2.02 intake valves given the extra bore size they can be made to be unshrouded pretty easily too.

My car was an LG4, and those aren't the original heads. I had 882's on the 350. The machine shop gave me those back by mistake.

Probably going to be in Edmonton in December or January, not quite sure yet. Haven't heard anything from Margaret about the book at all.
