Could just be a bunch of rotting leaves and stuff all accumulated against the evaporator core, where they always seem to pile up.
Take off the top of you evaporator housing and clean it out. You might be surprised at how much stuff can get caught there.

If the heater core is going you will smell anti-freeze. The core will be leaking anti-freeze behind your dash. And when it finally goes it will leave a big puddle on the passenger floor board.
But if the smell you have is something other than anti-freeze, then it is not your heater core.

It's the large blob of plastic & fiberglass stuck to the firewall on the pass side, right beside the engine.... the thing that makes your pass side spark plugs hard to get to... I doubt you need a pic to find it

on the passenger side of the car, you see that silver tall canister? that is the accumulator dryer. one side of it goes to a metal line to the evaparator right up against the firewall. if you cant find it you dont have a/c
