Cleaning for intake swap

I have taken off my old lg4 intake and I am ready to clean up the block for the performer rpm. This is my first intake swap and I need someone to walk me through the clean up and pre cautions so I don't drop dirt into the valley. Im ordering felpro 1205 intake gaskets what else should I pick up? Any tips or tricks on installing gaskets/ sealers?

Put an old towel or some type of large cloth in the valley and tucked in under the heads. Stuff paper towels in the intake ports. Scrape it clean, remove paper from ports first, pick up the towel by the corners and keep all the debris in it while removing.

For sealant, coat both sides of the gasket end ports, which are for water, with a standard brush-on gasket sealer. Use a bead of silicone sealant on the end "china walls" instead of the supplied rubber pieces. I like to coat the bolt threads with Teflon sealant to help prevent oil leaks.

A shop vac is handy to sweep up extra debris and coolant.

Ok I think I have a problem here. On the passenger side of the lifter valley there is build ups of sludge on the walls and in the lifter bores but none on the drivers side. What is causing this and how can I clean it up. The car ran fine before I took off the intake and seemed to have good power for an lg4.

Help!

Is the build-up limited to the center portion of the passenger side, or from front to back?

That's oil breakdown from the heat of the exhaust cross-over passage. Use a synthetic oil (a "real" synthetic), and you won't have that problem.

For now, clean as much of that stuff out of there as you can. The shopvac to pick up the pieces that get by the towel is a good idea.

Ok i was scraping the gasket off and I knocked a chunk off the exhaust crossover and it fell down the passage. Is this going to cause a problem? where does the exhaust crossover go to the exhaust manifolds or the heads?

It goes into the exhaust ports. You should be able to pull the manifold off and grab the piece out of the port.

Perfect since i have to take off the exhaust manifolds anyways.

edit: I took off the exhaust manifolds and I can feel the crap around the exhaust valves, so I guess the heads are gonna have to come off to.
