The pintle is the portion of the IAC that moves down the machined seat on the tbi and closes off the passage. Its powered by a small stepper motor inside the housing. It can be removed, but the easiest way to clean it is just with a toothbrush and some gentle solvent, like naphtha or carb cleaner, and brush the carbon deposites off. Lubricate the shaft that leads into the housing with a few drops of motor oil after cleaning. The pintle is the cone shaped machined portion sticking out of the IAC housing in the picture below

Incidentally, it only takes that much dirt (upper photo) to completely kill the IAC's responsiveness.
