Need help buying Car, Confused on engine

I am looking into buying a so called 90and 1/2 Irocz camaro. To make it short ill start. The guy said it was a kit car and he saved 5grand buy putting it together himself. Is that B.S.. Also he said it had a tpi 350 in it but I poped the hood and it looked like a carbed small block, it had a black cast intake manifold and a round old style carb air cleaner. Could it be a 305 tbi? how do you tell the difference between Carbed, TPI, and TBI. It sas z28 and iroc on the dash and Irocz on the sides under the door the engine bay is red and the exterior is white and needs a paint job bad. also the bumper sas irocz. It is a 5 speed convertable. Also I have a book Muscle car chronicle and it sas all Irocs were 350cubes I am confused on this one Any help would be aprecciated

Car: 1989 TransAm GTA
Engine: One sweet modified 355 TPI.
Transmission: The kind that shifts....
It could be many things. Sounds like a hodgepodge of parts to me. Get the VIN # and run it on the decoder found on this site.

If the 8th digit of the VIN # is a "8" or an "F" then its a TPI. "8" is TPI 350, and if its a "F" then its a TPI 305.

If the engine don't look like the pic below, its not a TPI. No matter WHAT he says.

TPI looks nothing like ANY carb I've ever seen. Below is the first picture I ever took of my engine. This was before I even owned the car. hasn't changed much since then, its just a little cleaner. Its a TPI 350

I have one suggestion for this car. STAY AWAY FROM IT. There are too many holes in this guys story.

Car: No more birdy
It's a peiced togather car, the only thing it has going is it being a convertable. It sounds like a stolen car with a different vin plate or one that was wrecked and patched from 10 different cars. You need to find out if the title is good, probably not. I'd buy it reguardless but I dont suggest you do.

And the only carb setup I seen that looked SIMILAR to a tpi is a carbureated centrifigal supercharger, and it only looked VAGUELY similar.
