700r4 or 4L60?
I had a question, a friend was talking to me online tonight and he has a 91 firebird like mine and its an auto and he said he has a 4L60 and said it was the same as a 700r4. I was just lost cause I thought the 4L60 was computer controlled and in the 93-97 LT1 cars. He also said the 700r4/4L60 was rated to withstand 400lbs of torque. Just want some clarification here. Anyone help me out?

Wasn't the 700r4 re-named in 1992?
[edit] Heh, maybe I should clarify that question- Wasn't it renamed in 1992, and not 1991?

Rumor has it the 4L80E they put in the trucks is supposed to be quite a bit stronger than the 700R4/4L60E, but I have no idea what would be involved in fitting one of them up in a car. Just food for thought.

There's a lot involved in putting a 4L80E into an f-body.
For starters, IIRC it doens't even physically fit with resorting to a good old fashioned BFH treatment in the tranny tunnnel.
Then there's the electronics to run it. If the price tage for the tranny alone didn't kill you, the computer to run it will. You have 2 options. Get a nice aftermarket ECU like a haltech that has built in capabilities for contorlling an E tranny, or use a converted stand alone diesel truck unit (several aftermarket EFI swap companies amek 'em $$$)
Then there's the little stuff like the crossmember and driveshaft length and torque arm mount.
The upside is this, the 4l80E is a th400 with an overdrive. As such, they have been built to run 9s and maybe beyond in many apps. Popular amongst the GN crowd who get sick of replacing 2004rs every couple weeks.
