L89 heads?
i might be getting an 87 camaro with a 350 and TPI. i havn't seen it yet but i'm assuming the engine is original. did it have L89 heads? how good are they compared to 041 heads?
also, how hard would it be to get it from its stock 225hp to about 280-300 with the stock heads(or 041s if they're better) and TPI?
how close would this stuff get me? complete exhaust, about 9.5-9.8:1 compression, and a bigger cam(i'm not sure how much bigger you can go with the TPI). basicaly i'm looking for close to 13s in the 1/4 and be a good daily driver.

L89? Do you mean L98? That's what a TPI 350 is. They called both the F-body and Vette TPI 350 an L98, although the engines weren't the same.
Anyway, the Vette aluminum L98 heads with porting will flow about the same and produce about the same power as iron L98 083 heads with porting. So, port your heads.
But, that's not all it takes to produce the HP increase you're talking about (remember, the factory number is flywheel net, while most crate engine and aftermarket product information talks about flywheel gross). The cam the engine has now can be improved with more lift and a quicker ramp, but for "real" power increases, you need to increase duration - which raises the powerband RPM-wise. To accomodate that, you need to make major modifications to the TPI itself - shorter runners at least, porting the plenum & base, larger throttle body. And improved exhaust, of course.
Next roadblock is the MAF-style TPI. It doesn't know what to do above 500 cfm. Now you're talking about conversion to speed density, PROM tuning, etc., etc., etc.
You want 13's with MAF and good daily driver? Put a good exhaust on it and spray it.

what if i just went to higher compression, a little bigger cam(maybe 1.6 rockers) with the stock computer, ported the heads a little, and a good exhaust? i'm only 16 and i don't have a ton of money to be putting into a new intake and stuff.
also, what does a stock 87 350 iroc put to the wheels? is the LT1 rated at the wheels?

well according to TPIS 3rd gen f-bods do not need a larger mass air they are good to 500hp and to prove the point you will need that kind of hp to run in the 11s with a 3600lb car and this has been tested with my old car and many of my freinds rides as well,i myself prefer speed density since its intro in 90 both systems can be quite powerful through chip tuning SD has a little more advantage though...

sorry, in a camaro book i have it says that an L89 engine is a corvette engine and the only difference between the camaro and vette engine is that the camaro has iron heads and choked exhaust.
