Is 15 degrees initial timing too much?
Is 15 degrees initial timing too much?
I bumped my titming to 15 degrees advanced today and ran the can in the quarter. I pulled a horrible 16.4. Should I back down the timing a bit? Will this help performance? Does thet much timing take off of the top end of the rpm power?
Thanks for any imput guys!

Well, you've apparently learned first hand what I've been saying all along.
Advanced ignition timing 'feels' good to the seat of the pants, but the the engine will lay down on you once it stretches out and the internals head up from the combustion.
Assuming no mechanical problem exists, backing off on the timing will bring back the performance.

hmmm, that was my thoughts as well, I will try retarding it down some. Thanks!

If you can get in enough runs during a day at the track try different settings for each run. Start at factory or a few degrees advanced, make a pass, advance it some more, make another pass etc... At least that way you'll have real numbers to back up your SOTP feeling.

As stated above, the best way would be to get time at the track and play with the timing a little to see what works better.
I have my +.020 400 in my truck running at 15 degrees base (35 total) and it loves it.

Base timing should be set to achieve a total timing of 38 degrees. In order to do this, you will need to know how much advance is built into the PROM. Install a timing tape. Then with a timing light, rev the engine until total advance is achieved. Adjust your base timing until 38 degrees TOTAL timing is shown on the timing tape. This will insure optimum timing and maximum performance at WOT.

Since you have a non computer carb, I'm assuming you have a non-computer distributer. If you have a computer dist. it's probably not giving you any advance. How much advance does your dist. give you? Total timing is going to be more important that your initial timing. You may need to get a recurve kit to recurve your timing curve. Also, the optimum timing varies from car to car. So, track testing is really the only method to find the optimum timing.
