I have been considering the HSR for my 395 stroker motor, but have read about hood clearance problems. I have an IROCZ.

So,,, in looking at the HSR, why cant we machine it down 1/4"???
(off of the top, where the upper plenum box attaches)

There are typically only hood problems on firebirds. Your IROC shouldn't have a problem.

Also, JMatlock milled down the top of his, but I think he still needed to cut out part of the hood bracing to make it work on his TA.

Those with the HSR, do you think that the manifold can be machined down????

Can the top surface be machined down without really effecting anything???

I am talking about the base, not the plenum. (just want to make that clear)

Yes it can! I added heli coils to the base just to make sure the fewer threads could still generate enough clamping force. FYI, the top and bottom of my HSR plenum have been milled down along with the base. The top two TB bolts have been countersunk as well has the TB plate screws. HSR installation details are on my page in sig.

Jerod,
Why did you mill it all down. Was this absolutely necessary or would cutting out the bonnet brace be enough on it own.How much material did you mill off.
thanks again

John

Im not positive about other cars, but the throttle body area had the least amount of clearance on my setup, this is probably due the the lack of downslope on TB as compared to a TPI setup. Id assume this is why JMatlock88 countersunk the bolts? Just an FYI, clearance seems to be more of a problem on poly-mounted engines.

Yes, formularpm is correct that the Energy Suspension poly motor mounts raise the engine significantly...somewhere on the order of 1/2"-3/4". In my case, it was necessary to modify the plenum and base. Right now I have about 4mm clearance between the throttle body corner (passenger side of TB) and the hood. I did take material off of the corner of the throttle body. I didn't have to mill the entire top side of the plenum. I could have sloped it like a tpi, and that would have looked pretty trick as well. As for the bottom side, base, and screws, unfortunately these were indeed necessary. I milled about 1/2 the total thickness on the upper and lower surfaces of the plenum. Good luck you all!
