TPI - Carb Conversion

Alright, I've been fooling with this TPI unit for more than two years now and it;s not cutting it. I have however gotten pretty good at working with carb's. I was contemplating swithcing the ole' IROC over to a carb system. The way I look at it is that it will take me a good $1500-$2000 to get my car ready to sell for what i want to sell it for. I figure If I can make it reliable with a more simple carb system for less than $2000, I can just keep it and not worry about selling it.

Aside from a new intake and carb, what else do I need to consider? Anyone done this or know of any good tech articles to look at?

you need a non-cc dist, carb, intake, fuel pressure regulator, or a mech pump with a carb sump in the tank.. thats pretty much it as far as parts are concerned.. as far as carbs not being reliable my cars are extremely reliable and start with half a turn of the engine.. does ur efi car do that?

You will need a Non-CC distributor, carb, intake, Fuel pressure regulator and thats about it.

You can do it for MUCH cheaper than 2000$. You can probably get at least 400$ out of a complete TPI setup. Then put that money towards the carb setup.

My car is much much more reliable with the carb that it was with TBI. Its getting really cold here so it doesn't drive the best with the choke closed but once its warmed up its fine.

I say do the swap. You wont regret it.

Not even going to answer that, it was a joke and I dont wanna start the whole carb vs EFI flame war...

sure does, even at -10 degrees, but like mentioned above, i dont wanna start an argument, im not gonna tell you whats best everyone has their preference, but whats so unreliable about your TPI? every car has its problems, but if its with tuning the EFI get someone good at programming the ecm and what not, and usually it will be much more reliable than a carb system... lets not argue about that though... switching to carb is simple, just need the same parts you need on any other carbed car, but as far as the fuel pressure regulator goes i believe you have to get a good one with a return port still, and your car already has a return line, so no need to worry bout that, just make sure whatever regulator you buy is for carb cars (5-7 psi) and is capable of handling upto 60 psi because your efi fuel pump is putting out 45-60 psi.

on another note you can pull your wire harness and computer out, but what ever you do DON"T CUT A SINGLE WIRE!!! if you have your complete tpi with harness and ecm you could get $400-500 for it

lastly TBI's suck, and id rather have a carb over tbi, but id rather have TPI over either of those

I would rather have a lt1 intake over tpi. I thought about swaping to a lt1 intake. I figure it would take me forever and It would never run quiet right so I decided to stay carb. Maybe someday it will get FI again who knows.

on a proformance app i'd rather have a carb or lt1 intake or any other type of proformance fuel injection.

Re: TPI - Carb Conversion

Holy way old post Batman. I sold that car four years ago and never did the carb swap. Really, it would have been sort of a dumb thing to do on the IROC anyway. I sold the car with a knocking motor to The GreatJ...is he still around?
