A Question about Freon gas

I wanna take the airconditioning units out of my trans am. But as i pulled on one of the hose's i heard the pssst of pressurized gasses comin out. Someone told me its freon gas, but whatever.

I know this stuff is deadly poison, but other than that i dont know anything about it. Is it all gas? Is there any liquid in there? whats the deal?

Can anyone out there give me a few pointers for safely removing the air conditioning units?

No its not poison, it wont kill you, unless you breathe so much of it you dont get any oxygen. It does supposedly destroy the ozone layer however. When its under pressure it turns into a liquid. In a working A/C system about half the system has liquid freon in it, the other half has freon in its gas form. The change from one to another is what causes the heat exchange.

Put on a nice thick glove (freon spraying on your skin makes thing a lil' icy!) and get a screw driver. If you look closely you'll notice valves with caps on them on some of the A/C tubing. Uncap it and push the valve down with the screw driver. Stand back, its not really a poison but its not something you want to breathe in or get on you.

BUT, the "safe" way of doing it is to take it to a qualified mechanic who can properly empty the freon without it getting into the air ...I really dont know the laws but maybe they'd even give you some money for it since its not made anymore and is rather expensive to buy.

the fine is very large if you vent it like that. I would never tell anyone to do that, small shops will usually take it out for free if they can keep it. that's also assuming you have some to make it worth there time. http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/609/

you know law vary from place to place but TGO never approves of breaking any law. ( at least that's something close to the official position) if you heard a hiss i doubt if there's anything left in the system to worry about. one thing i always remember about freon is it's heavier than air so it'll collect low to the ground and is harder to mix with air if the air isn't moving. the next question is how's it hurt the ozone if it's heavier than air?

Being 609 certified, and opening a 20 pound tank full with R-12 on the steps of the capital building while playing Judas Priest "breaking the law" --- Now that’s breaking the law

way back in the dark ages i use to work on a lot of off road equipment and to get bushing in we'd hose them down with a 20 lb tank or r12. the bushing would shrink up a little and be a lot easier to put in or drive in as the case may be. back then no one ever said freon was bad for people or the enviroment.

i don't think that r-12 is bad for the environment. its all just a scam by dupont. i go to a tech school and one of the classes they teach you is a/c. my teacher was explaining his theory and the more i listened to him the more he made sense. he said the dupont is the only company that holds the rights for r-12. he also said that their rights for r-12 are done soon. meaning that anyone could make and sell it. dupont does not want that to happen because they would lose money. so now the make up some bs crap about how bad r12 is. now dupont makes a new refrigerent that is supposidly more environmentally safe. they make a law saying that you have to convert your a/c system to r-134a if you service it. and what do you know, dupont is now making money again. i thinks its a load of crap. no one ever mentions that the hole in the ozone is over antartica. how the help did our r12 gasses burn a hole in the ozone all the way down there. do what ever you want its your own car.

Yea, this stuff was still under pressure. i just used some bolt cutters and sniped the tube and walked away.

It was still under alot of pressure. When i came back there was some liquid sprayed onto my front end and fenders, so i wiped it off and started removing the components.
