Okay, here's the low down:

Im two bolts away from getting the engine off. Im unbolting it at the bell housing. These last two bolts are on the drivers side. where the clutch fork is. Im underneath this thing having a hell of a time because i only have a narrow little window to stick the wrench thru. Its damn tight under there, and that clutch fork box thingy is in the way.

Has anyone here ever encountered this problem before when trying to get the motor off? And if so, what did u do?

 

Back when I did my clutch I didn't have any trouble with the clutch fork, at least I don't remember it. I did have trouble top passenger side bellhousing bolt. I seriously had about 5 feet of extensions on it and swivels on it. I'd just try using a long line of extensions.

 

i take it you already have the tranny out correct? if not unbolt the trans from the bellhousing and remove it.. gonna havta do it to reassemble it anyway (makes it a lot easier to put back togather IMO..) so might as well do it now if you already havnt.. now that you done with that i assume its just sittin on the motor mounts unbolted with the distribitor removed.. if not remove the dist so you dont damage it.. now stick a board under your oil pan and put a jack under it and tilt it towards the back to give yourself a better angle or just pull it with the bellhousing on it still and then unbolt it.. although thinking about it in my head i cant picture what would be in the way.. assuming the trans is out and the slave cylinder is unhooked you should be able to move the clutch fork up and down a few inches either way.. should just be able to unbolt it with a small extension and a ratchet..

 

The distributer is already out. so is the carb, power steering pump, alternator, and the exhaust manifolds are disconected.

I was going to take the engine out and leave the tranny and bellhousing sitting on a block. there are six bolts conecting the engine to the bellhousing. Ive taken out all of them except for the two on the drivers side.

I dunno, i guess i gotta remove the master cylinder to get better access to those bolts? or do i have to take the bellhousing off with the engine?

 

get a universal swivel (about $4 at any auto part store) and about 9" of extension.

the only bellhousing bolts i remember being hard to get to were the top ones, but a swivel should allow you to get at anything.

 

We left teh bellhousing on my engine when we pulled it, just unbolted the tranny and moved the motor forward and up.

yup that above would be the way to do it with a manual tranny, dont unbolt the bellhousing from the block unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing, its held on with 4 bolts that are easy to get to where as the bellhousing to engine block bolts are much harder to get to, but are pretty easy if you pull the tranny out of the way first

Okay, makes sence. 4 bolts is easier than 6.

so i take it out with the bell housing. so now i gotta disconnect the clutch linkage. cool.

does an 85 have a z-bar or hydrolics? if its a hydrolic clutch all you have to do is remove 2 bolts

hey, i just pulled my engine last night. I left the tranny right on the engine. i just put a jack under the tail shaft of the tranny, unbolted the crossmember, unbolted the motor mounts then let the jack down on the tranny. on my engine hoist i had the piece that allows you to tilt the engine so i tilted the back all the way down, pulled the engine foward then jacked it up. came out easy, and it will also be easier to put back in instead of laying under the car and bolting the tranny back up.

 

I already unbolted the tranny from the bellhousing and undid the clutch doohicky. Now all i gotta do is wait for a buddy to give me a hand with the cherry picker and it'll be out.

 

pulling the engine by yourself is not that hard. when i pulled the engine out of my t/a when it went to the crusher (sob), i called a buddy up to give me a hand. he was late, i got bored, and he pulled up to see the engine in front of the car and me smoking a victory cigarrette. those feel so much better than pissed off butts! just take your time, watch everything, and you'll be fine
