Porting my heads myself....worth it????
Porting my heads myself....worth it????
I am rebuilding an 89 350 TPI motor, which is completely stock. I plan on porting the intake, installing the LT4 HOT Cam, getting headers, high-flow cat, Hooker Cat-Back, and an AFPR. My question is, since I have never ported a set of heads before, would you recommend that I do it myself? If I do, what do I need to be careful about? Also, anyone have any documents on head porting? ANY help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

X84,
Porting the heads will help, but it will help more if you port-match your intake to the head too.
Go to www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.htm
That is Standard Abrasives' website, and it will guide you thru a basic bowl port job and port-match.
You can expect 20-25 HP from the head and manifold work.
Good luck !

It doesn't look too hard to do, but would you recommend that I myself, who has never ported heads before, do it with only the help of that document? Did anybody else use the SA document? If so, how'd they turn out? Thanks.
X84,
Check the other posts on head porting in the active topics and the archives. It's not difficult to do correctly, but is time consuming.
It's also not difficult to do wrong. If you've never done it before, I would suggest calling around to some of the local repair shops and asking if they have any old junk heads that were removed. If you get a scrap head to practice you grinding, you'll get an idea of what's involved. You'll have a little time to study the castings, and can even cut it in half to find the water passages and see what areas to avoid.
