Hard Cruise Control question...
Long ago, when I snatched the 305TBi and installed a 92 L98 TPI and computer in my 89RS the cruise stopped working. I have the mechanical/electrical VSS on the tranny, i.e. my mechanical speedo still works and I have a sensor to send signals to the ECM. I understand there is a sensor on the back of the qage cluster that needs a certain Hertz signal to operate the cruise. Is there a mismatch between my 92 ECM and my 89 cruise parts? Or did I cut a wire when I pulled excess wiring when I installed my Painless (cough) Wiring harness? Are there signal I could test on the harness at the cruise vacuum modulator? Any help appreciated.

Sounds like you may have lost the VSS as you mentioned. The signal goes straight to the cruise control module, which is just under the dashpad. If you need, I can look up what wires it would be at the module.

I wish I had more experience behind my guess, but yeah, it could be either the sensor on the back of your speedo, or the 89 cruise module is not compatible with the speed density computer. You could probably get these two parts pretty cheap from someone parting out a 90-92 car in the classifieds section.

C'mon Rob, I would have figured you would have asked me!
The problem is that your VSS Buffer is inside the ECM. So in order for your ECM to be able to read a speed input, then you hooked up the purple and yellow wires that said "VSS" to the VSS. Now, you must run a wire from the ECM to the Cruise Module. If you want more specifics, let me know. I will scan the connector end view for you.
If you want to do it properly, get the terminal that goes into the ECM connector. You can go to any dealership, and ask to purchase a terminal from the "Packard Electrical" box. It will probably cost you about $1 a piece. See if they will let you sort through and pick out what you need. Some places are cool, and some are dicks.
If you need any more help, let me know. Remember, I did basicly the same, and I used a Painless Wiring also.

GMTech, aka Bernard? I would appreciate the diagram of the harness plug so I know which pin hole to place the new wire in. I hadn't really thought about this problem in awhile, but I got a bracket to reinstall my cruise vacuum and started thinking about it again.
I'm know the guys at George Moore Chevy pretty wheel, they let me head back in the body shop before and pick out some body fasteners for free. Should be a problem.
Tks.
I probably won't answer back for a few days, underway with the Navy tomorrow.

Yeah, its BTripp from sethirdgen.org
I will scan the connector and the diagram, and post them on the picture post at sethirdgen.org b/c if I post them here, it will get lost in about two days.

Ah, I thought it still had the mechanical speedo and external buffer in 89. GMTeach has you covered!

He still does, but the purple and yellow wires that used to go to the buffer in the I/P cluster, are now going to the ECM. And since the 1227730 ECM has the buffer inside the ECM, now all of the buffer outputs must be wired to the ECM. When I dumped my LG4 computer, I had to do the same, but I also had to run my speedo wire from the ECM since I didn't have a mechanicle speedo.

Now that just confused me!
But after reading it a couple times, I now understand I think. From wht you're saying, the 7730 ECM has a set of VSS outputs then? I may just look at the manual and read into it a bit more, but I want to understand it.

That's cool. Now if you don't mind, another question. Why a different pulse rate for the speedo than the cruise? Does anyone have any idea?
Wow this is too cool! I can be lazy and not look stuff up! LOL
Thanks GMTech! Maybe one year I can be super smart, too! I'm trying!
