Vortec Heads!
Well, I just had to announce that I just bought a set of SDPC's Upgraded Vortec heads this morning and I can't wait to get them! Anyways, I'd like some opinions on what I can expect from my new combo:
Upgraded Roller Vortec Heads (heavy duty springs machined and good for advertised .575")
Performer intake
CC Q-Jet and Dist.
Hedman Hedders
3" headers-back exhaust w/ Flowmaster muffler
Comp Cams 270H-R10 cam (.500 lift and 215 dur, 110 lsa)
All emissions delete
Thanks alot!

Sounds good man, what is the RPM range on that cam, you might want to get a bigger stall , and some steaper gears to go well w/ that cam other wise i dont see how your going to take off with that big of a cam, also if you have all emissions delete go w/ the performer RPM manifold its much better than the performer. Other than that your lookin good let me know when you get some numbers with that beast. Good Luck.

Well, first off, about the cam. Comp says the 270 is the biggest cam that you can run with a stock converter, and they recommend IIRC 3.23's or lower gears. Oh, I think the range was ~1500-5500, somewhere in that range, I dont think its a high RPM cam. Regardless, I'd like a better converter down the road, but the wife about killed me when I bought these heads, so the stocker will have to do for a while. The 3.23's I'd like to keep for the simple fact that I drive it on the highway often (2 hour trips home from college), so 3.23's seem to be the happy medium for now.
The only reason I didnt go with the RPM (actually the Air-Gap) is because of hood clearance. I need to fit it all under the stock Power Bulge hood, so I thought the performer would be the best/safest way to go. I researched on here and coudlnt find any evidence of anything better (Perf. RPM or Air-Gap) fitting under the stock hood.
Thanks for the reply (and sorry for the long post), I'm just so excited to finally have gotten some performance-oriented heads! I will definitely post more when I get it out in the spring and take her to the track.
Anyone else?

I say if you will make about 390 to 400 hp. Now that I look at your sig, you still have the CC carb and dist thats goning to hurt your power some unless you tune the computer perfectly.

I've got the RPM under my stock 87Z hood with a drop base air cleaner. What that means for a formula hood I don't know...
Not sure what kinda power you're going to be looking at though. The cam is single pattern (Vortecs perfer dual pattern) and the Performer will be sapping 15-20hp outta it... Should still be a great strong runner though. I run 3.42s in mine but I think 3.23s will be just fine... I had a pretty low stalling converter in there to start with and it was killing me though, the 2200-2400 converter I added was much nicer.

I use to use that cam in every build I did. It is a good cam, for your setup, it pulls real hard 3k+ kinda dog off the line but not bad at all.

I think thats why it sucked so bad (the cam) with my LO5 heads, not a lot of bottom end, definitely no top end.
Thanks for the replys guys. Anyone else want to guess a ballpark estimate of hp/tq?

Do some hard research on the intake.
Get some specs from Edelbrock that detail the heights of the 3 different intakes: Performer, Performer RPM, Performer RPM Air Gap.
If it will fit get the Air Gap. Run the drop air cleaner if it will help you clear.
Thats jusy my .02, I have no real experience with carb setups but everyone who seems to run that combo Vortec/Air Gap have great results.
I run a Superram/SDPC Base setup on my E-Tec heads with the Comp XR276HR-12 224/230 .501/.510. A little more cam when you get a bigger verter will really make things fun.

I REALLY REALLY wanted the Air-Gap, that was my #1 option, but I'd rather play it safe and know that everything will fit under the hood, as I couldnt find enough hard evidence on the boards of Air-Gap fitting. We'll see how she runs with the performer for now, maybe down the road when I get my Engineering degree (and job, of course) I can afford another one.
No, I know there are better options but I cant afford anything extra popping up after buying these, so I decided to play it safe.

Important... A/B Measurements
Checking for Hood Clearance
To ensure adequate hood clearance, check the height of your stock manifold and compare the “A” and “B” measurements against those of the Edelbrock manifold prior to purchase. The heights of all Edelbrock manifolds are listed under “Installation Notes” for each model in the intake manifold section.
Please Note: To figure carburetor pad height add dimensions “A” + “B” and divide by 2.
For example, Performer manifold #2101: (A) 3.5" + (B) 4.6" ÷ 2 = 4.05"

A college student, I hope you scored some Pell Grants and interest free loans courtesy of the federal government and funded by the national tax base to help pay for the current mods. I am also a college student, and took full advantage of all those financial opportunities to build my car up!

The money came from somewhere....? :lala:
Actually, I had some other outside money from UPS (they have an Earn and Learn program), and I used that since my scholarships and loan covered my tuition and fees. Being in college isnt so bad sometimes, really.

Oh, ya unfortunately I already purchased the Performer. I had found a couple people running the RPM under a Camaro hood, but nothing greater, not to mention under a Firebird hood (dont know if theres a difference in hood slopes?). Anyways, its too late now. Thanks for the links, though. I actually knew that that info was available, I just dont know how to measure the exact absolute height fittable under the hood. Measuring intake/carb heights is not a problem.
