Parts Number Book for an '86 Firebird

I don't know where else I could have posted this so here it goes.
Hey guys what is the name of the parts number book that has all the parts & pictures of everything that is on an '86 Firebird. I would sure like to get one so I know what I will be ordering w/ the part numbers & all so I don't have to explain to someone over the counter each time I want to order something and have them go: HUH?!?!?!?
Thanx guys & I hope this made sense.

actually i dont think that would be feasible anyway, since each parts store carries different brands, and each brand has different part numbers in most cases, except for a few bearing/seal companies or suspension stuff, like moog.

There isnt such a thing. Your best solution is to grab the dork on the other side of the counter and strangle him to death... well, maybe not.

Where are you going, places like Autozoo, Schlep Boys, places like that? I'd try and find a mom+pop store for your real parts, and stick to the chains for plugs, oil, lifetime alternators, easy stuff. You will find that the mom+pop stores will serve you better on the less common parts, will go out of their way to get them (ever special order from a chain store? LOL most take days) and from my experience can beat the price easily too. And the guy behind the counter is always paid better at one of those places, and should know his stuff better. Most of their business comes from dealing with the quick lube, gas stations, and tire stores, so if they dont know what someone is talking about over the phone, then they will go out of business in short order.
Some of those places may be willing to give you a few parts catalogs so you can look up stuff yourself, and if the store you call or stop by so happens to carry the same brand or has a brand with the same part numbers, then you can give them that. And dont even think about cross-referencing... more often than not, that will get you a foreign car part for your domestic car.

I've got an 86 firebird factory parts book at home. It lists all parts for all models with diagrams and descriptions. I'll give you the exact name for it when I get home. I got it off ebay and I'm sure the microfiche version is also on ebay regularly. It helps when you have the part number so you can put them in the worldparts gm part search engine to see which dealers have how many in stock ....

Mike, what I do, is use & abuse places like http://www.carparts.com and http://www.wrenchhead.com and http://www.expressautoparts.com - you can put in your year/make/model/engine of car, and find any part you want. It's kind of like being behind the parts counter; the screens are the same stuff the parts stores see.

I take it you weren't talking about performance stuff, just stock parts...

GM Service Parts Operation put these catalogs out. These books are no longer available as everything is on computer now. My local dealer had two and my buddy at the parts counter gave me one of them.

The last printing for GM parts catalogs was 1993. You may be able to find one at a swap meet or try a Super Chevy Show. Keep looking and good luck!

*scratches head*...

They have been using computers in the GM dealers so long I forgot that they still had books up to that point in time. IIRC its called GM Service Parts Manual. It will still only give you the GM number, which would need to be cross referenced if you were looking for an aftermarket part instead of going to the dealer. I worked in parts long enough to know cross references suck.
