Car: Guess
Engine: Crazy 8
Transmission: So close to being a manual I can taste it
When it doesn't start does it crank? If it doesn't crank, it sounds like you are having a heat soak problem with the starter...

no such thing as a heat soaked starter.
simply a starter that is too weak.
timing too advanced agravates the problem.
when you go to start a hot engine, if the starter is tuning the engine too slow and without enough power, when the spark plug fires before TDC, it ignites the air/fuel easily because the chamber is still nice and hot, so it drives the piston straight back down before it could reach TDC. that rotates the crank backwards.
the starter has to fight this, but a starter that is up for the job will be able to turn the engine over with enough torque to get the piston past TDC.
i had the same problem when i put a new 9.1:1 compression 350 in my car, replacing the 8.5:1 compression 305. and i re-used my old stock starter.
being that it is old and weak, it wouldn't start the engine hot, so i had to do one of two things
back off the timing, and lose power, or get a stronger starter,
i got a stronger starter.
