Stupid V-belts!!

Ok. I've got an 84 TA and an 84 Z28.
I recently kept having problems on my Z28 with the alternator squealing like crazy. I switched it to the serpentine setup from a 91 Z28 and now it works fine.

I just took back my 84 TA from the person that was buying it from me due to non-payment.
The TA is doing the same thing. No matter what tension I put on the belt, it squeals.
The alternator is a new (rebuilt) one from the parts store. It doesn't squeal much but now it looks like it's not charging the system.

It doesn't look like the pulleys are misaligned at all.

Anyone have an idea???? This is getting really frustrating. And I can't afford to get another serpentine setup for awhile.

The TA is an LG4 Automatic. The Z28 is an L69 5 spd.

Thanx.
Randy

What brand belt are you using? If its a Gates brand belt they do squeal. If its a Napa, Carquest belt its a Gates belt. Also gates brand belts tend to stretch more than other brands. I had this problem on a Toyota with a Gates belt and I switched brands of belt and it went away. I buy Dayco brand belts I think they are better quality.

I had this same problem after replacing my alternator. Ends up it just wasn't tight enough. This could be related to the fact that the system is not putting out enough power. Grab it with both hands and pull that sucker back as hard as you can. Have someone else tighten the bolt. Next time you take off the alternator mark the placement of the bolt so you know where to place it at when reassembling. If you have already done this, disregard and follow preceding post.

THe best thing I ever did was replacing the V-belt on the alternator with the ribbed setup from a newer LG4. (Similar to serpentine, but just for the alt. and water pump) I got my pulleys from (I think) a '86 Grand Prix, but they were on almost all 86 LG4's and I think maybe even 85 V8's in general. Look around at a salvage yard!

I had the same thing happen to my car! The first time it was the belt was worn out so I replaced it! The 2nd time was right after I replaced the alternator and I found out it was just not tight enough! The two handed method might work but it didn't for me!! I ended up taking an L-shaped lug wrench and putting it through the hole in the bracket and pushed on it.....got great leverage to tighten it REAL TIGHT! Now it's perfect!

Soon to upgrade to a 383 stroker w/TPI, Hedman Shorty Headers, pocket ported 64cc or 76cc heads(undecided), ported intake, comp cam, TPI air foil, Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator, possibly bigger injectors!
Current project: Keeping my car running until I get the money for the above mentioned project! :-)
