Lack of power.......

My car seems to have a real lack of power. By my estimates, I should have around 300hp, but it seems like 150hp. My car bogs when I jump on the pedal, I checked the carb(edel. Perf. 600cfm #1406)and put in a stiffer step-up spring(orange) and the rest should work fine for what I have. What else could it be?

The car is an'87 Iroc-Z with a '92 350 4-bolt, bored .040-over with a mild cam. The Manifold is an edelbrock Perf. with an Edelbrock Performer #1406 600cfm carb, GM HEI upgraded with Accel parts. The heads are TBI truck heads and stock exhaust manifolds for clearance reasons.

ohhhh just wondering?? where did you get thet edlebrock??? go back to the stock step up-sring, read the article edlebrock problem??????? yes, it mine!!!! i had the same damn problem! mine was that i kept getting bad carbs.( brand new!) right fromt the box! did you get yours at autozone by chance??? if so its a good possiblity that you have a bad carb all-round! in the instruction manual you got with the 600 read and follw the instructions to a science and re-adjust your "idle mixture screws"! trust me thats all mine was! are you still using the 700 from your conversion?( yes, im psychic!, no i just did the same conversion!) is the t.v. adjusted right with the correct throttle bracket?(the stock one wont work at all!) that also makes a big difference! the intake sounds great! its dual-plane! good + on the ignition upgrade! thats a great start im getting the proform kit for 77$ through jegs! its got everything from the cap to the springs and 50,000 volt coil. the power loss is from the idle mixtrue screws not being set correct, or.. the floats are out of wack does it seem to surge or idle funny at all?.. honestly??! if it does then its the floats out of wack. thats a big power robber! the idle mixtrue screws are a big power robber! and finally change the step ups back to stock! they dont need to be changed!( your engine is about the same as mine!, literally!) and also get the 700 adjusted to a good carb bracket! dont follow the instructionsin tech articles listed on this site just start out and push it all the way in(fluch with the plastic piece) then pull it out 3 or 4 clicks and take it for a run and note the shift pattern and adjust it acordingly!( how you get the most power out of it!) but what ever you do DONT GET IT PUSHED IN TOO TIGHT! the t.v. is a great hp robber if not set perfect!(trust me!) if ive left something un-clear(no question is dumb) better safe than sorry later.! just email me . oh yeah is everything ok with the conversion? did you use a block pump? also did you keep and use the return line?(very nesseary)!

Man I would really need to look that carb over to be sure what the problems are. If the carb worked good (no bog) before and is more than a year or so old then it is possible you may need to replace your acellerator pump plunger (a plastic & rubber piece). When they wear & no longer seal they sometimes cause a bog. Other common things with an aging Edlebrock is the very small passages like the air-bleed tubes and the acellerator pump nozzles. The small tubes can get clogged with dirt and moisture, and also alcohol (ethanol or methanol) mixed with your gasoline can cause corrosion that blocks those tubes up.
Other times a weak or faulty ignition system can cause the symptoms you describe. Luckily it is easy to swap carbs with a buddy who has one running good just to test if it's the carb.
good luck
