Short or Long water pump for 400sb?

I am going to get a stewart water pump for my 400sb but not sure whether to get short or long for my application. Can someone enlighten me?

Long. Get the one that fits your car. The block is the same externally, the accesories don't care what the bore and stroke are.

I like to run the short waterpumps because I always see a much better selection of models to choose from in short-style. If the model you want is a short style then you just need the Moroso extension-block kit to space it back out like the long pump. It's just two aluminum blocks and longer bolts... no problem.
I always run the short pumps with spacers.

good luck

GM stopped using short water pumps somewhere around 1969. The trouble with using one now is that all the accessories typically will bolt to the pump. Short pumps don't come with accessory mounting points while the long ones do.

I used a short pump on my big block installation. No power steering, no smog pump, no AC, electric water pump drive. I fabricated an alternator bracket to mount the alternator down low on the passenger side.

If you still have all those accessories then I'd recommend a long pump unless you're willing to fabricate mounting brackets.

The short style pump was mainly used on Corvettes and some 68 and older Chevy cars and trucks. You can use the short style if you get the spacer kit along with it, but make sure it also has mounting bosses on it for your alternator bracket.
