ok fellas i need help with this...i have a 91 RS with 30k on it and i just had the heater core replaced. when i got the car back, the speedometer did not work. are there any harnesses he may not have put back on? Also sometimes now i can be driving and when the car is warm, it will just shut off, sometimes wont start at all. when i put it in neutral, it starts. Ever heard of this? Help!

 

Do you mean you're trying to start it in drive? If so it's not supposed to start then. heh. Umm.. I've heard of ignition coils failing when the temperature gets to a certain point.. The car will be fine until a certain point and then just cut off. (I think it's the coil.) I'm not too sure about the speedo.

What do you mean by not starting at all? Does the engine turn over but never start? Does the starter not engage? If you could be more specific with your question it would help a lot.

have the answer!, its your neutral safety switch. if and only if you can start it in neutral then its fine. will it start only in that gear>? will it start in park?? if not its the switch and nothing more! about the shutting off never ever heard of it happening!?? have you changed the fuel filter lately? could be that!? as for harnesses your speedo is supposed to be mechanical untill a certain year! does alll the rest of the guages work ok?? if so is mecahnical and needs to be hooked up is all! not sure when they switched to electrical in camaros?

If your speedo isn't working, you should also be getting a MIL lamp on the dash. There is only one VSS on the car, and it serves both the speedometer and the ECM. Scan for error codes.

As for the inability to crank the engine to restart, we need more detail. The starter should only operate when the transnission selector is in PARK or NEUTRAL, or the clutch depressed on a manual. If it will crank in NEUTRAL but not PARK, you need to start looking at the neutral safety switch, the wiring, and switch adjustment.

Regarding the stalling, the problem could be caused by any number of things. A code scan might reveal some helpful data. It's always a good idea to include the engine/fuel system info on the car when posting, because some of the differences can be significant.

what i meant when i said it would not start, it will not start it park. When i put the key in nothing comes on:not even the clock.and will NOT crank. then i put it in neutral and the clock comes on and the car cranks and starts. And sometimes, ill be driving and the car will just shut off, gauges, clock and car, 5 seconds later, everything comes back on. hope this helps.
