Going to junkyard for the first time...any tips?

Me and my freind are going to cruise out to a gm (mainly camaro) specific junkyard today to look for stuff for my car. Dont have anything specific in mind i want, just gonna check it out and see if i cant get some good stuff for my car. Any tips as far as what to bring in case i find something i want. I figured id just throw a toolbox in the trunk and that should do it. Anything to look for or something that if i find should for sure pick up (like worth a lot, or hard to find)? Thanks guys.

t top bags come to mind as hard to find items
take a hack saw, bolt cutters, anything like that, no point messing with stuck bolts if you don't have to.

If ya got one, bring a small tool case that has all your basic tools in it. this way here you wont have to lug a big heavy tool box around the yard(especially if its like the ones here in fl with loose sand everywhere)

Thats interesting you said T-top bags, cause me and my freind just had a conversation 5 minutes ago about how he wanted to look for ttop bags for his 300zx there, cause nissan doesnt make them and chevrolet cars have them.

josh...are u going to San Jose 3rd gen resource or something like that. ive been to that one. they have a LOT of stuff. however...most of the cars are TBI, or carbed and older....pre 89. lots of loose parts though...so if you dont see it in the yard ask the attendant. they have aisles inside that you can find just about anything. prices are pretty good. its mostly f bodys and vettes but they have others. when are you goin....maybe ill meet u there?

Are you guys talking about the one on Oakland road in SJ?? I've been there a few times, they usually have pretty nice cars, they arent trashed like most places, but personally I don't really like it, they are expensive, and it isn't like a normal pick and pull. There is a ghetto one in Oakland on San Leandro BLVD that has some decent cars some time, there are also a lot in Hayward down past the Toys-R-Us. I usually just bring a medium sized tool kit, and some rags.

Josh,

Something else you should be aware of. I've never visited a yard on the left coast, but I would suspect that the conditions are similar.

Take some adhesive bandages in your tool kit. Don't forget a flashlight. Wear durable shoes that actually protect your feet. There are lots of sharps lying around.

Take a walking stick - I'm serious. Around here, the yards are not a zero-population center. You'll find all sorts of inhabitants in the abandoned "hotels" that we've placed there as a parts source. Mice, rats, raccoons, opossum, all manner of snakes, shrew, scorpions, not to mention insects. Ticks are always abundant around here in the spring and summer. Poking a walking stick around the floor or rear seat of the car will rouse the inhabitants before you are down there face-to-face with them. Many of them are wary of new "guests".

The one off of Oakland road in san jose is nice.. but really expensive. If you really need something from them, just call ahead, they are pretty good about knowing their inventory. If you need little interior pieces they may be good though.

They know what stuff is rare and isn't and their prices reflect that. For example.. they want about $175 for a front GTA wheel. About $100 for each piece of 91-92 GTA ground effects. $100 for any clean fender.

I picked up a Front LCA from them cause then you dont have to waste all your time pulling it.. but I dont think you'll pick up any "deals" there.

Come to think of it. There really aren't any super good junkyards in the Bay Area I can think of...

Everytime I got something good.. it was really far. I got a complete 91 GTA interior (everything) for $300 with good leather seats in Sacramento for example.

All im really looking for is possibly a wonder bar, maybe bigger sway bars...maybe the headliner storage thingie...and whatever else little trinkets i can find that my 91RS doesnt have. Im not looking to spend a lot of money or get any great deals...just looking for some small stuff. The one other thing i was really interesting in getting was a z28 grille...with the foglights...i saw a camaro there with those on it and i was wondering if i can put them on my RS, around how much it would cost, and how hard it is. Do you think gm sports salvage is good for these things i want?

Oh and one other thing i was going to look for was a 145mph guage cluster for a 91 electric speedo. How much do those go for, any idea? Would it be cheaper to just get the speedo instead of the whole cluster. How much of a b i t c h is it to change the speedo?

they would probably have some of that stuff, they are one of the few places in the bay that actually has TPI cars(Irocs, z28s etc...) They will pull stuff for you too, and have a lot of stuff in the back that they already took off cars.

Does anybody know about an F-body specific junk yard in the New York area? Or in New Jersey or Pennsylvania? I live on Long Island, and would love to go to a place like the one in San Jose. It sounds like a great place. Please let me know. Or let me know how to find one in the area. Thanks.

You can get used pieces too, you don't have to get the new grill, if there is one on a car. But you should have seen what they wanted for the hood pieces for a 91-92 z28, like 140 a piece, I could get an entire hood for that.
Oh yeah, one other thing i don't like about them, they dont like to break things apart, like if you need a cover for the center console, they only want to sell you the whole console not just the cover.
Oh well, try hayward maybe, look in the phone book.

Ya i asked for a used grille that i saw...looked like it was in perfect condition..but they said they dont sell just the grille if the nose is in good shape...and in this case the car got rearended so they said theyd only sell the whole nose. I went to another junkyard and got quoted $80 for rear and front iroc sway bars and a wonder bar...better then the 45 a piece GM sports wanted...but still too expensive in my book. Well i guess ill be visiting the pick and pull, or looking on ebay for some

ive been to that junkyard many times, its called GM SPORTS SALVAGE. they are insanely expenisive, but they have all the hard to find parts. Try PACIFIC auto salvage in San Jose, i got my rear bumper for 75 bucks when GM sports salvage wanted 150. i forget the adress but its off TULLY ROAD, turn right off the freeway past the chevron. also try RR salvage in your hometown. ive been there a few times, if yer lucky they will have a 3rd gen there, really cheap prices, really really cheap.
