Help me determine the right axle
Help me determine the right axle
I want to find a 90up, posi, disk, 3.42 gear'd rear end. When I go to the junkyard, how will I know I've found what I want? Is there a code somewhere stamped on it? I really dont want to pull the cover off a bunch of diff's and count gears, is there a better way?

You will still have to pull the cover but.......Pull it off and spin the gear around until you see numbers stamped on it. Bring a calculator with you. There will be a ratio in the format XX.XX such as 62:17. This is a ratio off of a locomotive but you get the point. Do the division in the calc and you got it.

Those rears only came on 305 5-speed cars with dual-cats. So look for those. You can also spin the wheels and count the number of times the driveshaft spins. It'll be 3.42 times or so (round it to 3.5)
