Valve spring installed height

how close to hitting the installed height is good enough? i'm going to buy a couple of boxs of shims to keep on hand and the fewer differant sizes i buy the cheaper it is on me. i can always stack shims to get the thickness i want. i was thinking .010 and .020 would get me with in .010 or .005 and .010 would get me with in .005. so how close is close enough? i'm tired of trying to build heads and not having shims.

Missing a decimal place or am I reading it wrong?
Anyway, since you have to keep coil bind away by about .060, you should match the installed height to about .010-.015 and you should be fine.

Yea, I dont think thats something you would find in a manual. Thats where we tried to set stuff up at in the shop. Spring rates arent that accurate anyway, trust me.

Ede,

If you're concerned about the spring providing seat pressure, 80 pounds is generally enough on most intake valves under 2¼" diameter. Most aftermarket and performance springs start at over 100 pounds pressure at installed height.

If you have to settle for an installed height that is not exactly the OEM or design spec, install them a little taller than the specification if you can tolerate the extra rocker height. The extra lift before binding is preferable to the few extra pounds of seat pressure you might get at design height. If you've aleady machined the pockets to a given depth, try to get close to maintain valve train geometry, but don't worry about 5 thousandths - as Max says, the springs you're getting out of the box aren't 100% inspected and not that tight on tolerance.
