What mini starter?

I'm thinking of getting a mini starter as the stock unit only seems to last 2 years before it experiences heat soak troubles. What is everyones reccomendations on which one to go for?

I'm currently thinking:

summit mini starter p# SUM-G1660 $157.95
Powermaster p# PWM-9500 $199.98

I'm wanting to clear the hot start problem once and for all. Also, is the 305 153 or 168 teeth for the flywheel? Saves me counting.

Thanks

Robert

I am using the one from Summit that you listed with no problems. It cured the heat soak problem with my SLP 1 3/4
Headers and been starting great for over two years now.

I have a CVR one, #5323 I think, it was in the same price range (about $150-160 IIRC). I've had it for about 5 or 6 years now. Works great. I had it on a 10.4:1 400 for its first couple of years, then I've had it on this 305 I have in the car now for the last couple.

Thanks for the replies.

DJP87Z28,

How much space is there between the starter and the exhaust?

Thanks again

Robert

Same here, I have hooker LT's on my 406 and I have plent of room, you just have to use shorter bolts, or do what I did, use the factory exhaust bolt spacers left over from the 95 Z header swap on the starter bolts.

edit: oops i'm an idiot, i didn't push the qupte button, I'm using a starter from a LT1 also.

I have a Tilton one with the following specs:
1.9hp Hitachi motor
3.75:1 ratio
10.5lbs
250amp current draw

Jeg's # 454-54-10001 $275.99

I couldn't be happier! Starts fast and no problems so far!

That's a little more than I was wanting to spend. It's between the Summit and the Powermaster at the moment. Decisions, decisions

Ive got one of those on my truck and a CSI one on my bird. I paid a bit over $200 a pop but they work real well especially on hot starts.

Jegs sell's one under thier label for around $150 I'm fairly sure its a CRV (toyota) crossbread starter.

Which one did you go with? I contacted Summit and they said that it was no longer available. I am looking for one that will clear SLP 1 3/4" headers.

I haven't order it yet. I'm thinking the powermaster. I don't see their being a problem with SLPs.

I got the Summit brand ministarter, it says Pro-Torque on the mounting block. I am pretty sure Jegs sells the same product under the Jegs brand product.

My buddy also has a Summit brand mini. We both live in Phoenix with 10.5:1 383 motors. We both have ceramic coated Hooker LTs and they always kick right over, even heat soaked in 100*+ temps.

I'm also using the 4th gen starter. It's about half the size and weight of the ancient 10MT starter originally used on my '89. Tons of room in there now for any kind of header. Lifetime warranty, too.

Is the 4th Gen starter you're referring to work with a 168 tooth Flywheel (a 10.5 compression 383 with manual transmission)? Will it handle this compression? Is that what the 95 Z28 post was trying to say?

There's a guy here in town who sells nothing but 3rd gen parts (he buys them and parts them out), and he just got a car with a mini-starter... if you want I can see what he wants for it. He's also my uncle in law, so that helps a little!

$119.00
brand new
ball bearings
Pro-Torque

I've gotten two from there so far. One on each bird. No problems whatsoever with them. Only 10 pounds too.
