I thought stainless steel headers weren't allowed to rust?

Hi guys. I picked up some SLP 1 3/4" shorties along w/ the y-pipe but they're not shiny...more of a rust color...can I just polish them up? what caused this? what do you reccomend to make them look nice again?

Not all stainless doesnt rust. The stuff they use can get surface rust, but nothing major. I have heard of people just polishing them up.

The SLP headers come in 409 Stainless steel (unless specified 304). 409 is good because it is cheaper than 304, but has identical wear properties. 304, doesn't show surface rust. Thats why SLP uses 409 for the intermediate pipe and over axle pipe in their catback package, and 304 on the muffler and tailpipes. Madmax is right, the only rust you really get with the SLPs headers is surface rust. I would sand them and paint them with VHT manifold paint followed up by their hot temp clear coat. Both available from Summit.

Another thing. If you polish them, more than likely they will return to their original state.

Best bet is to paint them. My friend's GTA had glass beaded SLPs turn brown after 15minutes.

actually, I was fortunate enough to get them in their brown state before installing them so I picked up a few cans of 1500* paint and sprayed them...hopefully tomorrow I'll grab another spark plug (my friend decided to break one) and I'll bolt up these headers and y-pipe and see how the motor sounds. Hopefully then I'll get a catback sooner than later.

Oh yea...with so much of my engine bay cleared, installing headers literally only takes 5 minutes at the most so it's no biggie.

Mine have surface rust, I like it. Makes engine look more stock so when I pop the hood everybody thinks nothing's been done. I like the sleeper look, do everything under the skin so to speak. Upgrade from inside out. Good luck with the painting, I've heard that it isn't worth it. What about header wrap? Anybody think that's a good idea?
