How to check timing?
I know what I need to do for the most part, but i'm kind of confused. I know I disconnect that wire, use some white paint in the groove in the pully.
Where exactly do I aim the thing though? I know it goes straight down, but straight down at what? Is the light being aimed slightly off going to screw up the reading? And once its aimed, how do I figure out what the timing is?
Thanks.

Alright, I did just that. How do I get the timing from doing this? It looks like there is a very faint line sticking foward of the 2nd point, is that where my timing is?
If it is it is thats 2 degrees advanced right? And it should be back at the tip of the 1st V for stock on a 305tbi right?

try to clean up the tab so you can see the #'s and lines clearly. i've done this so many times i know where 6 BTDC is already. the first V pointing out should be 4, V pointing in is 6, then out again will be 8, and so on.

Alright I know how to check timing now, thanks.
I can see the lines fine, now I just need to figure out how to get in there to clean it off so I can see the numbers.
Thanks for the help.
A little engine degreeser goes a long way (and also burns your eyes with the fumes apparently). Anyway i'm at 4 advanced. Thanks again.

Want to know why I was having a hard time seeing it? I was holding the haynes manual upside down when I looked at the cylender numbers, and I had it on the #2 cylender. It is actually advanced 4 degrees though, don't ask me how I got an accurate reading with it on the wrong wire.

The easy way to remember the cylinders are : right side (of engine when facing it) odd cyliners 1,3,5,7 (front to back).......Left side ....even cylinders 2,4,6,8 (front to back)
