how do you remove the shifter ****?

How do you remove the leather shifter boot? I cant get the shifter **** off to remove the boot. Is the **** pressed on or threaded? Any ideas?

On my automatic transmission, I seem to recall there being a small black metal staple in the front center of the leather boot that had to be pulled out with a needle nose pliers. Then the boot/**** piece pulled straight up.

Staple in front

Both are right. I assume it's an auto because the manual is pretty simple to figure out.

I used a small screwdriver to coax out the long staple looking thing. It is on the front side of the shifter handle, (towards the radio) about 1/2 inch or so from the bottom. It's kinda hard to spot with the leather, but it pulls straight out towards the engine and the shifter will pop straight up.
