Help, Leaky valve cover.

Losing alot of oil from my left valve cover, it's brand new, not warped, and don't see how I could have overtightened it. What are the torque specs for valve covers, my chilton's says 8 ft pounds?? Also, I used a cork gasket w/black rtv, should I just ditch the gasket and use rtv. Thanks.

BD,

8 ft/lb sounds about right, but dump the cork gasket, make sure the rocker cover rails are CLEAN and straight, and make sure the flanges on the head are clean. Find a pair of silicone rubber gaskets, like the newer SBCs use, and install them without any sealants. You can't use the newer stock gaskets on your perimeter bolt heads, but aftermarketers offer the same gasket for perimeter bolt heads. Fel-Pro Perma-Dry ribbed gaskets work well for this, too.

there are several people that makes clips to spread out the clamping force of the bolts over a wider area too, you might want to look into that if you don't have them already.

Don't you know if you run slick50 you can run without oil?? no oil = no leaks

seal the gasket to the valvecover first and let that sit and dry completely before you put the valvecover back on. That way the gasket is less likely to distort (allows you to run those cheapie cork gaskets we all hate).
Oh and put the torque-wrench and breaker-bar away when you go to install the covers. I just go by feel and watch the gasket as I'm tightening so as not to distort it.

8 foot pounds?! Try 45 inch-pounds, works for me, no leaks, no problems.

yeah, found out 8 ft lbs is way too much, bent the hold downs in the middle. Ended up using some black rtv for now, will let it cure overnite and hopefully it won't leak all the way to work.
