Used 350 what model is Desirable
After all the advice (thanks everyone)aboot rebuilding my 305, I think i will go the 350 root. I have a 84 TA ws6 with T5 non computer or air pumps(canadian version). I want at least 270hp. I have an L82 but thats 350hp and I don't want to swap my t5 for an auto.
The t56 is about 4 grand with tax here. None avaliable in the junk yards.( No firebird or cameros either)They get shipped out as they come in!
So to get to the point. What car/engine/year should I be looking for.
Thanks again guys

what L82 had 350hp? never heard of that. anyway, why not build your own? I would definitely go with a 1-piece rear main but that will require a new flywheel since 85 and older use a different one than 86+. all 87 and up blocks that I am aware of are machined for roller cams if you want to go that route. Torque is what you need to be leary of on the T-5, horsepower isn't the big deal. I believe the GM goodwrench/targetmaster has about the power rating you want and it's only about 1200 bucks.

Single piece rear seals aren't the best block ever made. The smaller bolt pattern can have problems on high HP engines....that aside...since you're only looking for 270 horse the 1-piece would be a better choice for longevity of a clean driveway (doesn't leak nearly as often). Roller cams are nice for higher RPM engines but those can be retrofit into older blocks if need be. Plus the older engines are more readily availble than the SBC that only saw about 7 yrs of production. Anyhow, there is no real point in trying to build down a 350 to hold up to a t-5. Sooner or later it will die of either natural causes (age) or unnatrual causes (death by torque). Is that 4 grand Canadian? Because if it is, that's about what we pay here. You can get them shipped in from the US or take a road trip....you wouldn't have to pay tax on that, right?

Got my 350 from a corvette, you might check around some of the speed shops, or performance shops. Never know one just might have a used one, or recently rebuilt one for less. Mine was 600 from carb to oil pan. I did have all my own accessories, dist, ignition box and plugs tho.
i ve never heard of the L82 being rated at 350hp. the L46 wich used the same cam (450, 460 lift 224 duration) was rated at 350hp, only because it hade 10:1 and better heads than mid sevents smog vette motor. anyways, just swap out the cam. something in the .420 lift and 214 duration would be good. if you want you could ship you 350 over to winnipeg and i'll deal with it.

I suggest you buy yourself a whole aftermarket engine, such as found at Speed-o-motive, and install it. Any of their base-model motors will make at least 270HP and cost less than $2K.

The best 350 blocks have 10/20 under the timing chain, indicating high amounts of nickel and a stronger block. Of course the #1 important thing is if the cylinder walls are thick enough.

Will a T5 handle 270 hp? I thought they ware rated to like 250.
