how much oil does ths thing take??

well the question is stupid but here it goes. a 79 350 as listed below... i need to know what the deal is with this thing. i put a oil pan gasket on it a little while ago with no prob never leaked or nothing ran it probraly 10 - 15 miles since and probraly at least 3 hours of run time, its a good 40$ gasket. well i was running it a little at some high rpms (5k)and all the sudden it started smoking from under the hood. when i opened it and looked i saw what apeared to be oil all over everything on the front of the motor.i looked around to see what the deal was and noticed were it seemed to be coming from the front were the timing cover and the oil pan meet. i used silicone to seal that area as it instructed and im not fully sure that thats were it came from. anyways when i put oil in it last it took 6 quarts of oil to make it apear full on the dip stick.i just installed that as well its a chrome style aftermarket. i made sure that the dipstick tube was pressed all the way into the block when i put 5 qts in it still didnt show up so i put another and it showed level. the dip stick is made for my year and the pan is stock. i didnt want to risk not having enough. ever since it started spraying oil i havent been able make it do it again to see were it came from but i dont wanna risk driving it till i find the problim.. any ideas what might have happened???should i get a new dip and drain some oil or does 6qts seem ok??

If it's a factory pan for a 79 350, it holds 4 quarts plus the filter.

I'm going to assume you yanked off the smog pump.... correct?

So ask me how I know that.

Because your motor leaks oil out the front.

Look at the front of the block. Where the smog pump should be, there are 2 bolt holes. If you look in the upper one, you will see the fuel pump drive rod passage..... in other words, you are looking RIGHT DIRECTLY INTO the crankcase.

Put a short bolt, like ¾" or so, in that hole with some silicone on the threads. That'll keep it from spewing like the Exxon Valdez until you can get the smog pump back on. Then take it to the quarter car wash and clean all the schmutz off of it and see if it stays clean.

Alot of things I've learned by watching other people screw up, and absorbing the knowledge; but that is one screw-up that I can personally take credit for! I drove a car around for months that did that. Finally one day I took it to the car wash and sterilized it, and let it sit there and idle, and saw oil oozing from that hole.... I felt like such an idiot. I already knew the trick of using a longer bolt to hold up the fuel pump rod, I just had failed to connect that with the leak; until I saw oil running out. Now I don't forget any more.
