got a new motor need help

Got my new motor last night and its out of an 88 chevy truck. What I want to know is does anybody know if it is a 2 or 4 bolt - forged or cast crank - and roller or non roller I looked up the numbers but it could be either or on all the questions! As far as I know it was throttle body injected. Will the cam in it work on my TPI? O-yea its a 350. numbers are 14093638

That would depend on what heads and push rods you have. In the case of the push rods, it will depend on whether they're for a roller cam or not, and whether you put a roller cam back into this other block.

A block is not inherently a 2-bolt block or a 4-bolt block; it's the same block, the factory just installed whichever main caps they thought appropriate. Trucks are likely to get 4-bolt caps.

Same for the roller cam; that casting has the provisions cast into it for the factory's roller weirdness, but they may or may not be finish machined, and it may or may not have the roller stuff in it even if the machine work is done. Most likely, being a truck, it's not machined.

It is a roller so will my heads work? The heads I want to use are my stock 350 TPI heads. Will I experience a toque or horsepower loss using the TBI truck cam instead of my TPI cam?

Your heads will work.

Use the TPI cam. The TBI cam will cost you probably 20 HP, maybe more.

Never heard of "cam knock" before...

I doubt the dist situation damaged the cam. I'd sure take it out and look at it before assuming it's bad.

If your L98 cam is in fact bad, get yourself a LT1 cam off of ebay or something. You can pick them up for $50 or so. Just make sure you get one out of a F or Y body, not a B body.

This is all assuming your block is machined for roller lifters, which I highly doubt. That's another thing to check and be certain of before buying anything, rather than assuming.

I wouldn't assume that block is a 4 bolt either. The motor in my car came out of a 1 ton 90 model Chevy pick-up. From what I was told it should have been a 4 bolt due to being in a 1 ton but it's just a plain jane 2 bolt non roller. I wouldn't assume anything. I'd pull the pan and intake to triple check.

Already checked while I was degreasing 4 bolt with roller lifters!
