engine goes up to 4000 rpm at start up
I just finished putting my 305 back together. We rebuilt the carb and took out the distributor. When we start the car up it automatically revved up to 4000 rpm, so i immediately shut down the car. The fuel pump is pumping right once you turn the key on. Why is this happening? Could it be because it is receiving too much fuel, timing on engine is off since distributor was out, or carb isn't working right?

Did you check the idle adjuster screw? If you rubuilt the carb, and cleaned everything up, you probably had this screw off. Maybe when you put it on, you screwed it in too far.

I had a similar problem when I installed my Edelbrock Performer Intake. I forgot to put on the correct carb base gasket (with 4 holes in it) under the Q-Jet and as soon as i started the car it immediately went up to 3500 rpm and sat there. It is probably unlikely unless you also changed the intake manifold though.

No, I didn't put a new intake manifold on it, I did replace the old base gasket, but the new one that I put on is the same design and everything as the old one.
