backfires, big power loss, wont go over 20 mph, HELP!

Just bought an 89 iroc 350 tpi 3 weeks ago and when I was driving it down to get it registered, I started getting huge power loss. and engine sputters, turned it off and it ran fine . problem has gotten progressively worse and now will barely top 10 mph except for the first mash of the go pedal. changed wires, plugs, cap, and rotor and car still acts the same I got gas in my oil and changed oil and still get gas in my oil. cleaned k&n's and even tested coil too I get no codes in the ecm and I have no idea what is wrong . even tested fuel pressure and all my gauges and fluids check out.....PLEASE HELP

I'm not sure at all in this answer but one of my friends at school has some POS **** rocket neon that was getting gas in the oil and HE SAID it was because the injectors were getting to much gas and they were out of tune.

Sounds like a plugged up catalytic converter to me. That is an exact description of what happens when they plug up...I would put a new cat on anyways if it is the stock one because if it is that old and been running that bad, it has probally already ruined the cat. The fuel issue could be a stuck open injector, or could be cat related because the injector is dumping more fuel than the motor could use because of the restricted exhaust. I would not run it too much longer till you get it fixed or you could wash out your cylinders or bearings, and then you will need a motor (ouch).
Keep us posted on your findings.

well as far as I can tell I have no catalytic converter. I'm assuming that it is (supposed to be) where the y pipe meets the first exhaust hanger and it looks as though mine was cut out. though somewhat sloppily.

what do I need to do to test my injectors?

also, at first i thought it was my fuel pump so i got the tank two thirds of the way out when I realized that I was getting plenty of gas and checked the pressure, but i did run it without the back exhaust just to see and it sounded the same (backfiring, etc.) though it is very hard to be sure without hearing it under load.

and last but not least I do get the feeling it is flooding badly because when it is running (moving that is) it'll only do 10 but when you press the gas is when it sounds like it will die.

thanks for all your help gentlemen.

Are you getting 36 Psi at the rail when idling?

SOme other stuff if you don't have a cat

Mufflers can collapse internally as well blocking the exhaust. Do your exhaust manifolds glow red? Is your EGR stuck open?

Check the timing with a light, and verify that it is advancing the timing like it should with RPM. Also verify base timing. With TPI it should be set at 6 deg btdc. As a guess, I'd say it's timing related. If it's not advancing like it should, check the module and pickup coil.

Good luck, and let us know what it is.
