400sb and oil pan question
Is the oil pan a factor when installing a motor into an F-body. Are the bends and such the same for all sbc pans? I know the rear main seals is one difference. The 400sb I have already has an oil pan but I want to know when I go to drop the motor in that it will fit my bird. Thanks

Pans vary greatly with the chassis they came in.
I have the old 6-quart-system Z28 pan on the 400 in my 83, it fits everything fine. It absolutely requires a windage tray however. There's no way to guess whether whatever pan is on some random 400 will fit one of these cars or not. My gut guess would be it would not, at least not certainly enough to go to the trouble of building and installing a motor expecting it to fit.

Looks like I will be getting a new pan. I was pointed towards a moroso 6-quart p#20180 $118. Any other pans that would work for less money?

A plain jane SB chevy one will fit. Mine does. You can get a chrome stock one from PAW for 40 bux.

So a plain jane pan for an f-body will work or any for a sbc? I have a plane jane chrome one for a sbc on the motor now.

Ones for trucks and full-size will not fit. The one that fits in an F- or G-body will fit anything else. Most of the chrome ones like Spectre or Daytona are that, so they can be as universal as possible. So you're probably OK. Of course, you also need to make sure that it's for the early style dipstick tube arrangement and rear-main-seal design; so for instance one that will work on your 91 obviously won't work on the older motor.
