Get someone to crank the key while you tap the starter solenoid with a hammer. If she starts, replace your starter.

if you do what ede said and youve got power, thats the starter... just did 3 in mine last week.. the stock starter died, so got a new one, that one got shorted out in the solenoid cuz my dumb@$$ friend broke the cap and the 3rd one worked perfectly.. they are relatively easy to do.. about 1 hr under ur car if u take a long time.. but check for rebuilt starters if you get a new one, i have seen a trend where they make the solenoid caps out of plastic... if yours looks plastic, then put a hoseclamp around it before tightening your electrics down, thats a little trick i devised when my friend destroyed my old solenoid cap... but, if you dont have power @ the starter, check the battery connections, follow all the wires as far as you can and look for shorts...

yes they do... that, and old wiring... sometimes if the wires get hot, the coating dissapears and exposed wires always seem to find some sort of grounding point in an engine compartment... not much of a problem for newer cars with all aluminum and plastic engines.. poor us with quality craftsmanship, we get the electrical problems

try to find a place that will sell remanufactured ones.. they work fine when youre low on cash.. and they arent that hard to change out... i got mine for 60 + core... but deffinately heat shield it if you dont want it to die again... you should be ok if you want to just keep hitting it everytime it dies though, but do replace it as soon as you have the money

You could let it go, but you'll need to tap it more and more often and then one day you'lll be stuck.

The brushes are worn in the starter. A little tap moves things just enuf so it will crank.
