A 7mm socket. How do I get it out? I can't even see it. I know it fell towards the firewall side but where did it go?

i think i'd buy another socket if everything works and doesn't make any noise. if you're set on getting it out try dropping a magnet in the vent on a string and see if you get it.

...or, you and a buddy can each grab an end of the car, flip it over, and shake it really hard until the socket comes tumbling out. Make sure you empty the ash trays first...

(try the magnet on a string)

Tried the magnet on the string. When you look down into the vent you cannot see it. It feel into the opening that comes from the firewall. It's not that important. I have a spare. I just don't want it to cause damage.
PS Thought about getting a friend to flip the car but we have to eat a lot more wheaties first

Consider yourself lucky. A 7mm socket won't start to stink after a few months.

The defroster vents against the windshield? Here's a quick story-

When doing the first stereo in my car, I had to "rebuild" the side braces of the radio console. (They had snapped and weren't there when I bought the car.) I removed the radio console. I saw a lipstick-ended, un-smoked, Marlboro cigarette pointing at me from the heater vent I had exposed (by removing the radio console).

I assume your socket would be down there.

I don't think the vents fall into the center console otherwise hot air would blow from the center console. Anyhow, when I was rebuilding my column about a year and a half ago I dropped the screw for the hazard lights down there, it disappeared. 6 months later during the 5 speed swap I dropped down a screw down there, and stuck a magnent down there and then pulled out the hazard light screw first. Perhaps try driving you car up/down an incline then shove the magenent in there...might uplodge the screw.

Right, no air comes out of the center console. That's why I said "radio console"... you know, the part with the heater vents aimed at the floorboards?

Oh- I see- on your '84 Firebirds, the radio console and center console are one piece. On my '86 (later model) Firebird, I have a 2-piece center console. One piece "just" holds the radio & climate controls, and then the other piece runs along the floor (starting at the ashtray, going back to the armrest).

While you're down there, grab the socket I lost too.

That's why it's now standard procedure for me to electrical tape my socket to the extension whenever I take out the dash pad.

Ah. I see. I didn't know the lower vents were there in newer models. I kept saying to myself, "Why would he post something so blatently wrong?" when you're fully technically competent.

My jack as$ friend dropped one of the dash screws down there. I was able to get it out recently with a magnet, it was down there for almost a year. And yes it rattled around!

This sounds like a project for me. See how few pieces I need to remove to get the screws. I think if you DON'T have anything down there then you've never done anything to the car yourself.
