My CVR mini starter clears my super comps good. It'll work with both bolt patterns too ...and its also pretty cheap compared to other brands.

Yes the 400 block comes with the "staggered" bolt pattern, to accomodate the common starter that went with the 14" flex plate for the T350 it was usually mated with. This bolt pattern WILL NOT accomodate ANY starter for 12¾" flex plate or flywheel. The additional late-model inner bolt hole for this application MUST be added to the block. Even if the block has 2 holes along the edge, chances are the inboard one is too far out away from the crank to accomodate the more inward placed starter; a bolt in that hole would have to go RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE of the drive of a starter for the smaller flywheel. Therefore there is NO SUCH THING as a starter that will bolt to the 14" bolt pattern and also work with the 12¾" flywheel.
I also am using the CVR starter; with the add'l bolt hole drilled of course. But a stock 305 T-5 one will bolt up, as well as any other GM starter such as the LT1 one for that size.

Guess I misundestood!!
The starter I got with the staggered pattern bumps the flywheel! I was given one shim about 1/8" thick but I dont think it will be enough......RB, Can I drill this hole myself? or will I have to take it to a machine shop ? There is a second hole in a straight line with the first, but it is way on the inside edge..and doesn't seem to be threaded.
So in other words..to accomadate a mini starter to fit my 400 flywheel I must drill and tap the second hole..correct?..
Any pointers on drilling and tapping the hole would be helpful!
