230-240 Car Almost overheating WHY?

It is 60 degrees out today, not that hot. I have a 160thermostat. Stock radiator w/tranny cooler. I don't have an electrical fan. The motor is fairly new 1k miles on it. The fluids are filled along w/ the overfill container. Any ideas why it is running so hot. This is when I sit in traffic.

it might be the sensor that turns on the fan. If the fan sensor is broken, then your engine will heat up, and when the sensor is suppost to tell the engine fan to come on, it isn't becuase it's broken, causing the engine to overheat.

He doesn't have an electric fan. I'm assuming you flushed the radiator before you dropped in the new engine, so what kind of mechanical fan are you running? Mine heats up fast as hell too in traffic, but not with the new 200*F fan switch and 180 t-stat. Your cooling system is probably just less than adequate and a new engine will generate more heat than one that's been around for awhile. I would wire in a flex-a-lite fan or something with an adjustable thermostat so you can set it to suit you. One more thing, the air dam is till on the car, right? Other things to check, collapsed hose, radiator cap, maybe the water pump but I'd say yours is new. Hope this helps.

The goodwrench doesn't come with a water pump. Is it possible that you got a water pump for a tpi that has a serpentine setup with reverse rotation??? You say you don't have an electric fan, so you must have v-belts then (assuming) which rotate the water pump conventionally.

Just something to check.

This may sound stupid but my Trans Am kept overheating last summer and I have a 160 thermostat which was new and working. After replacing misc. sensors and relays I found that my Radiator Cap wasn't holding pressure. I replaced it and everything is fine now. Try replacing it, it's not expense and probably needs it away. Good luck!

I am using the water pump off of my 305. Could that be my problem, the car usually runs at 180 while driving. I am not sure what kind of fan it is I would guess a flex a lite, it's red and turns when ever the motor is running. Maybe I will try a new cap, I believe my brother put that on so I know it isn't knew.

Mark,

Make sure the coolant flow is adequate. Even if there is flow visible in the radiator tank, it may not be adequate to cool the engine. A worn pump or restricted lower hose can contribute to poor flow, as well as excessive corrosion in the system.

Air dam won't do much around town--it forces air up into the radiator when the car is moving. Thermostat won't make a difference at that temp. Running a carb with an open element probably doesn't help, especially when you are stopped.
Make sure the fan is in good condition.
Make sure the idle speed is high enough to spin the fan fast enough.
Make sure the idle mixture is optimum--to lean can make the engine run hotter.
Timing, Timing, Timing--make sure you have the timing set properly. Too much timing at idle can make it run hotter.
Make sure you don't have any air in the cooling system.
305/350 water pumps are usually the same part number.
Underdrive pully's spin everything slower to save HP(water pump/fan)
Lots of stuff can cause you car to overheat, the above stuff is just what I could think of right now. I running a flex fan on my 350 and it runs 190 around town, so you don't 'need' an electric fan.

you do have a fan shroud on it to direct air flow? Yes/No?

Actually I don't have a fan shroud which isn't helping, the fan sticks over the radiator.

Sounds like a combination of things: no fan shroud (being the biggest IMO), underdrive pulley (being the second), old radiator/pump, and possible timing too advanced may be the biggest culprits.
