Air Conditioning recharge problem

Well im tryign to recharge the ac on my 92 camaro rs. it has an l03 in it just to make that clear. well im trying to convert it over to 134a. the system was completely empty before i started this so i changed the o rings and drained the oil. now i hooked everythign up. fire the engine up and click the ac to max and blower on full. open the valve and wait to see if it will fill up enough to allow the comprssor to kick on. wait 10 minutes nothing happens. so i start to try and find the ac pressure switch cause i was told that if u jump the wires it will force the compressor on. i tried the sensor on the metal tank thingy by the blower(not sure what its called) and the sensor down near the exhaust manifold. both just blew my ac fuse so im kinda lost as to what to do. can anyone help me?

Look for a short, maybe a pinched or melted wire at the compressor. The switch on the tank is the low pressure cutoff so that would have been the correct one jumped to complete the circuit.

I agree with 'AM Racer', but for grins did you have a vacuum pulled on the system? You don't want any air in the system prior to charging.

The first thing I would do is check the resistance on the compressor clutch coil. It sounds like it is shorted and is blowing the fuse when you try to kick on the compressor.

hmmm i measured the resistance today.... 4.4 ohms. that seems a little low to me. can anyone tell me what it should be?

I'd have to check mine but that does sound low. What happens if you apply 12V directly to it with some jumper wires? It should engage whether the engine is running or not...

That's about right. Maybe a little higher than usual, if anything.

I don't know what you jumped; but what you need to do, is disconnect the connector from the low pressure cutoff switch on the accumulator, and connect the 2 terminals of the connector together with an insulated wire. DON'T connect anything to ground. That should allow the compressor to come on.

Trace the wires and make sure there's not some kind of wrong connection or something somewhere. The dark green wire should go straight from the cutoff switch connector to the clutch.
