I use Mercury Marine paint. My preference is the charcoal color. Their primer is good too.

POR, VHT, Plasti-Cote, Duplicolor - probably in that order of preference. Some recommend an epoxy primer and a clear coat.

I've used POR-15 on some body parts, and that stuff is ungodly tough... Wear gloves! They sell engine paint kits which comes with stripper/cleaner and common color choices. $40

I use a zinc phosphate/chromate primer (available at marine stores) and a single stage urethane (available at auto paint supply stores). I flows so nicely that you can brush it on if necessary. Its resistant to gas and brake fluid. I have even used it on brake calipers with excellent results.
BTW, my engine is Dodge Viper Red.

The Zinc chromate is available in black now from auto paint stores. It's recomended as a good frame paint with no overcoat so if you want black you might be able to use it alone.
Comes out kind of satin.

Hey ede. Which type of Rusto? Is it there "Hard Hat" series or just their plain enamels?

 

Plain Rust-O-Leum enamel. The "Hard-Hat" industrial enamel is very thin, and doesn't cover as well IMO. Regardles of what paint you use, some of is is alwatys going to char around the exhaust ports unless you never run the engine.

Allis Chalmers oragne is an exact match for the "original" Chevrolet SBC color.

Go with the POR paint....you have a wide choice of colors and it's hard as nails.
