Coating Headers in house oven
i just coated my edelbrock shorties in my house oven with plasti-kote hi temp paint. when i read the directions the first time, i saw bake in a household oven for 60 minutes on 650*F so i did, and now the house smells horrible, i got fans going and windows open, then i read it again, and it says in a NON household oven.
well anyways, is it safe for me to just clean the oven really good or do i have to buy a new oven, and how long till this smell will go away.

I dunno about that stuff, but I used DupliColor header paint on mine in my household oven... it stank for a few hours, but went away after I opened a few windows. Worked fine BTW.

the headers came out pretty awesome looking, the smell has gone away completely, i called the poison control, and he said he has no clue what is in that paint, or what type of damage it could do, and just to open the windows and turn on fans, i already did that, it took a good 4 hours before it went away, im just still worried about the oven, i think i should be able to clean the inside good with a brush, and some type of cleaner, and the put it on the self clean cycle a few times and it will be ok, but someone told me that i need to buy a new oven, because it baked the paint fumes into the walls of the oven just like it baked it into the headers, which seemed logical to me but i dont want to buy a new oven, not like anyone here uses it anyways

when powder coating I use a house over to do my small parts. And you can not use the oven to cook in after you powder something. and powder is a form of paint. so i'd buy a new oven. and coat some other stuff to pay for it.

the man i used to work for doing coatings says you can't. But that doesn't mean you can't. Is your oven self cleaning. Where it just gets really really hot and bakes everything out. I would just run it on and off for a couple of days and clean the pi$$ out of it. then cook something for your neighbors or something.

i did the self cleaning thing like 5 times, where it gets really hot, and it smells like a dryer, you know the smell like its cleaning cloths. the old lady doesnt know yet, and i think i want to keep it that way, so i dont want to tell her we need a new oven, and i dont want her asking why i just went out and bought a new oven. are those fumes really baked into the sides of the oven, im pretty sure the oven gets to about 650-700 degrees while it is cleaning, is that enought to burn off all the fumes? for the first time in a while im hoping when i come home she doesnt have dinner ready.

Make a run to the store and pick up some TV dinners and cook em up. If they taste okay, then you can consider the problem solved.
If not, feed em to your dog and deal with it tomorrow.

i finally found an answer to this, the way to completely clean the oven, is mix 32oz of water and 8oz of vinigar, and put it in a pot and turn the oven on till it starts to boil, and then shut it off and let it sit till it cools, and then repeat one more time.

i called the maker of the paint i used, plati-kote, and they told me this, i havent had anything cooked around here in a while, so i dont know why i cleaned it. it seems like it worked, it dont smell anymore stuff in the oven, and i also after i did the vinigar/water mix, i used a brush and scrubed it soap and water.

This post is funny as hell! From the sounds of it I'd say your oven is pretty freakin clean by this point, nothing to really worry about especially if the maker of the paint told you how to clean it.. FYI when I did my headers I simply coated them and put them on the car about an hour later and ran it for 30 mins or so at idle to cure the paint.. not sure if thats actually a recommended method or not but so far so good a year later..

I can just hear what's going through your wife's head...."What the hell! Homie won't wipe the pee sprinkles off the toilet seat, but all of a sudden he's got that damn oven spotless!! Wonder what he's gone and done now....."

My headers look exactly as delivered, with the factory black paint. Only shinier and smoother
