What engine and tranny do i have?
I have an 86 Transam with a 305 LG4 4bbl with 5 speed tranny. Ive heard that they used chevy 305's in this car, so ive been looking for a cam for this car. do i look under the pontiac section since its a pontiac or the chevy section? also what tranny do i have? And can anyone recomend me a good cam? Its going to be daily driven, i dont care if the idle i bad, i just want power! im gonna be street racing too...

What engine and tranny do you have? You answered that in your first sentence.
look for a small block chevy cam. If its daily driven, a bad idle isnt the best thing in the world. Sure, it sounds cool. But i have a Solid roller cam and it has a choppy idle. If i dont run an electric vacuum pump to operate the brakes, my cam doesnt even pull enough vacuum to function with a canister. So keep that in mind. The more aggressive you go, the worse the idle quality is and the harder it is to run vacuum accessories.
Street racing is bad. Take it to the track. And why sink your money into a 305. Save it and build a 350.

Your half right and half wrong. I only half-way answer my question. if you read carfully, i stated i was told i have a chevy engine, and wanted to confirm this since the car is a pontiac. Indeed i stated i have a 5-speed, but theres a code that goes along with those also. (hint. T5 is a tranny code:P)

You state you have a Trans Am, yes its pontiac. But then you said you have the LG4. What is the LG4? It is the 4bbl quadrajet 305 engine made by Chevrolet. Pontiac never made the LG4.
Same goes with the 5 speed. Look at what was offered with the LG4 in 1986. It was either the "A4" which was the 700-R4 (4 speed automatic) or the "M5" which is the T-5, commonly known as the 5 speed manual.

As far as looking for a difference (externally) between a 305 and a 350 block, there is no difference to see.
The only way to truly know if the 305 has been possibly swapped with a 350, is to run the casting numbers. Usually located on the rear of the block, by the bell housing.
As far as the cam, you need to tell us if you have emissions laws in your state for that year or not. If so, then I would not recommend too radical of a cam. Crane makes camshafts that are 50 state legal for your application.
I also agree that if in fact, it is a 305, then save your money and find a 350 to build. This will also allow you to build the engine, and still drive the car until it is ready to swap out.
