Some random engine assembly q's
Ok so I'm still working on my 383 and I've run into another typical stroker motor problem. My rods are contacting the oil pan. What's the best way to determine where the contack is in the pan?
The next question I have is about the knock sensor.....I don't know if the hole just needs to have the threads cleaned up, but the new one will only thread in like 1/3 of the way. Am I right to assume it should go in almost all the way?? If so does anyone know what size tap I need to clean the threads up with?
Ok last question for now....the knock sensor goes on the passenger side in the block, what is the hole for on the driver side in the same spot? I originally thought that was for the coolant temp sensor, but doesn't that go into one of the heads?

- Get the grossest, most garish, disgusting color of lipstick you can find; paint the rod nut corners with it; rotate, and observe.
- ¼" pipe. Use Teflon tape, about 6 wraps of it. Do not overtighten: this makes it overly sensitive. The Teflon tape will de-sensitize it a bit.
- A brass ¼" pipe plug. Usually the temp gauge sending unit goes in the left head, the fan switch in the right head, and the ECM's CTS in the water outlet.

vader says hot pink from wal mart is the best lip stick for this, but it's not really my best color.

Ok that's a good start, but is it ok that my knock senson only goes in that far or after I clean up the threads will it go in more?
I also came up with a few more questions while I was supposed to be studying for economics tonight. First, how the hell does the oil filter adapter go on? The bolts that I got from GM look almost like rocker studs. You can't screw them in from the bottom because the oil filter will never go on. How do I do this? Also, where is the oil pressure sending unit on our cars?

Paul,
The oil pressure sensor for the gauge is screwed into a port on/near the filter adapter. The oil pressure switch for the fuel pump is monted near the top rear ledge of the block, near the distributor opening but behind the ledge. If your block deosn't have the port and adapter doesn't have a sensor provision (I'd be a little surprised) you could install both at the rear ledge pressure port with a 'T' fitting, but it could get crowded there.

Thanks Vader...I'm pretty sure I remember a crusty old oil pressure sensor near the filter adapter when I picked the block up last summer. Anyways does anyone have an answer about attaching the oil filter adapter??

Your oil filter hardware sounds like the stuff for use with the factory oil cooler system... are you using that, or just the straight filter-only arrangement?

Paul,
You have the fasteners for using the factory oil cooler. Also, be sure and check the counterweights on the crank too for your interference. I had one slightly hitting the oil pan (Moroso 6qt)when I put my pan on.

Hmmm.....the oil cooler question is an interesting one. Is there an oil cooler on a 305, or just a 350? Maybe this would explain why I don't understand this one, but I would think the filter adapter would still go right on the bottom of the block? If this assumption is wrong please clue me in on how this is supposed to go. Thanks.

Paul,
Yup, the 305's also came with oil coolers. I am not real familiar with this set-up, but I am pretty sure that the oil filter adapter still resides up against the block and the cooler would then mount to the adapter using the fasteners you have.

Is it ok to snug it if it only goes in like 1/3 to 1/2 the way? For some reason this doesn't seem right.

Be careful with the knock sensor installation. It's not an issue of how far is screws in, it's the torque.
There's a specific torque setting you have to use. Has to do with the sensativity of the sensor.

Thanks....I'll check for the torque spec in the Chilton's Manual and I'll also use some teflon tape on it.
