Color Question... of a different kind...

Ok, today I took out my O2 sensor, and the part inside the manifold is covered in some kind of yellow carbon? wtf is that? I know its an old O2 sensor, and its going to be replaced after I get my paycheck this week, but I'm just curious now... what would make it turn yellow like this? Every other one I've seen at work (that was being replaced) was black, as I imagine it should be...

WTF is wrong with this picture?

Na, the threads are totally clean. Only the tip thats exposed in the manifold is covered in the stuff. Its not just a little of this stuff on the sensor either, the ENTIRE part thats exposed to exhaust gas is coated in the ****.

May be the result of some additive you or the gas co. put in the gas.

I've never used any fuel additives on the car, so I guess I can rule that out. It could be possible the gas co added something, but wouldn't it have come up on one of the others I've seen at work? I see about 4 or 5 used ones every day at work, and have never seen another like mine...

Anyone else have anything?

Do you always go to the same station? It has to be something from combustion. Oil additive if your seals are leaking, coolant if your intake manifold sprung a leak. Old sensor from PO after something had happened to one of the above? The yellow would make me think coolant, but you'd have mentioned other problems rather than a discolored O2 sensor. Maybe an old leak the PO had and fixed.

Actually, now that you mention it, the 305 I took out about 2 years ago was burning coolant, and the same O2 sensor is still in the manifold.

Think that could be it?

BY GEORGE! That could be it!!! It burned it into a new color, lol.

Sorry, I'm in one of my happy moods, lol.

The title of this thread was so intriguing that I had to check it out!

Black or yellow, hmm. Well, I guess I'm happy mine was clean and reddish, just like the inside of the exhaust manifold and Y-pipe. There wasn't even anything sooty in any of that stuff. Everything was clean, clean, clean. Still worked, never threw a code, and still passed emissions test too. And it was my original one!!! 17 years old, dude! And you don't even want to know how many miles were on it, lol.

I only replaced it cause I was embarrassed it was still in there, lol.

I better go walk the dog.

Yeah, I think it's time for a new fitting--definitely longer sleeves!

Adam, I found a 1985 Z28 L69 in a junkyard today!!! Code G in the VIN, although our original '83s were code 7, built 11/84 on the door sticker. Engine was intact, less the carb.

Who'd have thought that as late in the year as our '83s came out that they'd be the second least rare L69s, lol?
