Is this possible??? (Gears question)

Are gears interchangable??

For instance, right now I'm just modding my car for the occasional stop light race (no drag strips in this boring craphole, plus i'm more of a street racer), and i don't want to do gears, cuz my car is still my daily driver for the next four years or so. And gears would kill my gas milage and cause increased wear.

So is it possible to change the ratios only on the first two gears from a set of 4.11s per say, and leave the 3rd and 4th gears alone on my 700r4 (from the 2.73 set)?

no,
you just need to get a
vigilante 9.5" torque converter.

700r4 gears aren't changable at all. You are talking about the rear-end gears, that is completely different. Deeper gears won't hurt your mileage that much with overdrive.

How does the torque overter go about helping my performance. I've read all about them but no one has ever told me.

Any side effects? I'm looking to retain my top speed and not cause significant wear on my car, again it needs to last me awhile.

Torque converters multiply torque. A higher stall converter lets the engine rev higher(like when you launch) by slipping.
3.73's and overdrive gives me a top speed of 150mph. 2.73 gears will give you a top speed of 200 at 5000 rpm. But, chances are your car doesn't make enough power to overcome the air resistance to reach 150, let alone 200. 2150rpm down the highway at 60 with 3.73's. A gear change will completely change how your car drives with a minimal effect on fuel mileage(if you have overdrive). Deeper gears cause increased wear?

it multiplies torque depending on it's built in stall-torque ratio.
with the Vig 9.5" you will not need to worry about gears.
there is no downsides that I know of besides the money you lose when buying one.

As long as yu get a converter with the lockup clutch, your highway cruise fuel mileage shouldn't change at all.

Your temptation to light the tires at stoplights may, however, cost you a little more in fuel and rubber products...
